In my opinion the 'correct' but also the most emotionally draining way is to continue to treat them like you would your fellow human beings, but assert your boundaries if they start forcing political talk on you.

Right now I'd probably wait a week or so for them to diffuse their anger and frustration before engaging with them on more normal and non-political terms.
