hot tip for people new to Mastodon, whether from the #TwitterMigration or elsewhere:

if you want to support artists/friends/creators/people who rely on being seen for an income, use 🔁 as much as you can.

there is no algorithm, so ⭐️ simply tells the person you like what they posted, while 🔁 puts that post in front of people who follow you.

⭐️s are great for letting someone know you support them, but 🔁 helps other people support them, too! #FediTips

the absence of an algorithm means someone’s post having 100 ⭐️s doesn’t elevate it nor put it into anyone else’s feed.

which is ok! bc it means there isn’t an algorithm shoving posts from the like of a friend of a friend of a friend of a friend into your feed that have no relation to your interests!

but it also means you really need to 🔁 to ensure people are able to find audiences who appreciate the content they make/post/are interested in.

the downfall of #Twitter is going to be hard on a lot of people who create/perform/post for a living.

we’re losing a lot of our audience who won’t migrate, which means we’re also way harder to find. it can be despairing, and feel like we’re invisible here.

every 🔁 you give someone’s post can brighten their day, because it means someone, somewhere, was interested in their work and wanted other people to see that work in their feed as well. #TwitterMigration #FediTips

for me, it means I’m kinda having to spam my content when I go live on Twitch because, without any 🔁s on my live announcement, everything gets lost in the rest of the noise.

and that creates a negative feedback loop, because people hate spam and will mute/block you, hurting your chances of being seen even more.

so, if you see a post, 🔁 it if you can. it helps all of us who are just trying to make a living from entertaining others and making them happy. :) #TwitterMigration #FediTips

@carodjah There is not as much opposition to reboosting here. It gets a post that you want to feature to the top of your profile timeline and sends out the message to followers who may not have seen it the first time. It says, that you think you have something good to say and you want to share it.

Don't go overboard, but a few reboosts probably isn't going to offend anyone.

@rubicon In the native web app, boosts are grouped by default in timelines. So even if you have a bunch of people boosting something, it won’t spam the timeline a lot. However, a post being boosted a lot will reach people who haven’t seen it yet.
@rubicon ye, I boost my live announcements about an hour after I go live, bc I had to do that on twitter all the time to ensure even 10% of followers would see it.
