My rescue pup spent the first 6 months of her life on her own in a shed, then the next year at an SSPCA shelter. When I adopted her, she had no experience of the outside world so was terrified to step out the front door. Now, she’s happy to come hiking with me. Sometimes, though, when we come across a view, she stops and sits for a few minutes to absorb her surroundings before we can move on again. Here, she’s taking in the view above Achnashellach in Torridon.

@andy_morehouse That is lovely. We had a Westie who did the same thing - always willing to stop and admire the view which had its benefits when you'd reached the top of a hill and were completely out of breath! Your rescue certainly has a good home now.
@HelenLockhart Thank you! She tends to only stop when we're going back down. Uphill, we have to get there as quickly as possible!

@andy_morehouse What a great story and photograph. Wonderful that she has found her forever home!
We had two rescue dogs that accompanied us on many a long walk and mountain adventure - the best life.

Your photo caption description is superb - a great example for others to follow! @RabBrucesSpider1

@andy_morehouse @james_tweedie I agree. Superb image description. Thanks so much..
@james_tweedie @RabBrucesSpider1 Thank you! She's turned into a great walking companion, always enjoys the bad weather way more than I do!
@andy_morehouse @RabBrucesSpider1 One of ours had a similar background to yours.
Absolutely terrified of running water to start with. Until we took him up to Corrie Fee and he discovered the joy of leaping in and out of burns. Eventually got to the point he'd jump into lochans in winter on the hill for the sheer joy of it.
@andy_morehouse That is just the loveliest thing. And knowing the area well, I know exactly why that pup needs to stop and rest....... many, many times!
Have a happy life, pup!
@andy_morehouse
That is a beautiful photograph Andy. We have had 5 rescue dogs and have been blessed with their love and devotion. Every one of them had a completely different character and all of them loved being in the hills.
@Barker_brian I've had a few rescues before so I've had the same experience as you. This one now definitely loves being in the middle of nowhere.
@andy_morehouse Beautiful photo and a very moving story, it sounds like you are both lucky to have each other
@andy_morehouse What a sweetie. And an amazing photograph.
When we first collected Arthur (at 7 months old) we let him out on Baildon Moor on the way home and he was astounded - he'd never been anyway that wasn't a concrete yard before. His face as he realised how big the world was, and how green...
@Freyalyn Similar experience! first day on a beach and she sat still for what seemed like ages. Then went wild...
@andy_morehouse What a beautiful story. And what a lovely view for her to take in.

@andy_morehouse

She's very lucky to have you, and I'd say you are equally lucky to have her in your life. 😁

@bumble Turned into a great partnership!
@andy_morehouse Wonderful photo. Thank you for giving him a good home. What a rotten start he'd had to life!
@andy_morehouse @hollie This is our rescue dog. She’d only known a fenced yard, had no idea how to manage the timing of the waves. She learned by patrolling the edge like this, watching other labradors jump into the surf. Now she wades out and waits for the wave to lift her off her feet and put her down again, and then she rushes out.
@kate @hollie Beautiful pup! mine does more of a dolphin impression, bouncing through the waves.
@andy_morehouse Beautiful view! Great to share it with your gorgeous dog - pleased to hear she is doing well.
@andy_morehouse lovely photo and heart warming to read ❤️
@andy_morehouse That's a lovely story. Our girls also loves standing and taking in the view.
@andy_morehouse. Well she's certainly got good taste. It's a glorious view!! And I'm so happy for you both that she's experiencing it.

@andy_morehouse this is so lovely. My wee terrier has to jump on every bench we pass. I think it's more as a request for a treat, than admiring the view though.

Your image description is superb: I'll be following your lead and seriously upping my game.

@andy_morehouse lovely photo and even lovelier story. He's found his happy place.
@andy_morehouse she sounds like the perfect walking companion everyone wants, a pup who likes a good vista. How lucky you found each other.
@andy_morehouse any tips to start hiking with a dog? This is something I would like to do with mine, but I'm not sure where/how to start 😅
@ipirex check out this post from Ruffwear:

My main tip is to give your dog time to adjust to the extra exercise, takes them time to get fit too. My pup couldnt do more than 2 miles for the first couple of months so we slowly built up. Now she can do 8 miles although she'd be happy to do far more!
How To Hike With Your Dog

Trail time with our dogs gives us a chance to adopt their curiosity and sense of adventure. They stop to investigate a wildflower we’d walk right past, or splash through a stream we’d normally hike around. Their presence alone elevates every little moment, and they challenge us to see more and do more. Dogs are happy t

@andy_morehouse thanks! This is exactly what I was looking for 😃
@andy_morehouse love your caption (and post), so descriptive.
@andy_morehouse I'm in Awwww... surreal moment right there! If only we could see our ourselves from their eyes, as they would see this scene! Much love to her 🧡
@gunneraditya Thanks! do wish I could understand what she's thinking sometimes!
@[email protected] I feel the same way when I look at my GSD! Just if I could feel what he feels when I walk in through the door after being out of the house for a long time. Just that love is too emotional and too pure! Perks of being his fav uncle!
@andy_morehouse How wonderful. Our Lurcher does much the same, but generally there’s a dog that she has spotted somewhere 😀
@ces111 mine will definitely look for dogs, rabbits, deer, but the sitting thing is just plain different to all my previous pups
@andy_morehouse Is you dog thinking she is on top of the world and the luckiest dog in the word?
@lizMid7 Probably! one of those moments when I wish we could actually communicate!

@andy_morehouse

Thats lovely. I had one that liked to do that too, just sit and watch for a while.

@andy_morehouse
That is one happy hound!
@andy_morehouse Now that's a pup that's been given a new life and enjoying every second of it. Well done for showing it love and the sun ❤️
@andy_morehouse Luna also likes to sit and admire the view. 😍 #DogsOfMastodon
@andy_morehouse what a beauty!🥰yes! There are so many animals waiting for loving homes. Thanks for sharing . I found my side kick when she was 6 months. Now we stick together…
@andy_morehouse my dog has gone through 3 no pull harnesses. That looks like a very sturdy one. Beautiful dog great photo.
