hahahahahahahahahahah ahaha hahahahahah hahahaha its just a silly little smartphone should be easy ahaha ahahahaha

Take it for what it's worth from someone who has worked on the *ENORMOUS* teams for Windows Phone and Fire phone

looooooool good luck have fun

The silly little smartphone platform graveyard is strewn with the biggest names in tech, from Microsoft, Amazon, Nokia, Facebook, Sony, Blackberry, Mozilla, you name it
@Pwnallthethings Based on what he's done with the bird co, there's no way he'd produce a phone that would ever ship. Scope creep and requirements changes every 3 minutes (assuming anyone would work for him)
@programmer01135 @Pwnallthethings There is absolutely a way for him to release a crappy phone with very little staff (and awful software support): rebrand a generic Chinese smartphone from BBK.

@Pwnallthethings don't forget LG! They didn't even design their own OS and they STILL dropped out of the market

I'm sure the TeslaPhone will do so much better than that and won't just use some Android fork like Fire Phone tried to do.

@Pwnallthethings
Literally my first thought, LoL

He gonna being posting links to side load Twitter while he finds a smartphone company to buy.

He's gonna need an OS too.

@Pwnallthethings

And Apple, if you count the Newton as their first attempt.

I hope he tries. The schadenfreude of watching the failure destroy his wealth would be…satisfying.

@Pwnallthethings don't you remember when he will have founded OnePlus?
@Pwnallthethings he can’t stop himself. Let him try, what can it cost to make a phone? $10?

@Pwnallthethings Let's see, Steve knew how to pick the right people, motivate them, let them stand up to him if they thought he was wrong. And I think Tim follows that style in his own way

Google prizes open discussions & arguments backed up with statistics.

A phone isn't just about tech, really hope Elon tries so he learns some (ok many) valuable lessons.

@Pwnallthethings but Musk is single-handedly smarter than those companies collectively all up - just ask him.
@Pwnallthethings man I was so pumped for the Sony smartphone
@Pwnallthethings you’re underestimating the ace-in-the-hole Elon has in future OS lead architect David Sacks.
@Pwnallthethings Along similar lines, twitter doesn't seem to me to be a convincing foundation for a payments system. Maybe the Muskphone would be more viable, I dunno.
@Pwnallthethings HP acquired Palm at the end, so them

@Pwnallthethings

I still mourn the Nokia and Microsoft attempts

@SapphicLawyer @Pwnallthethings Windows Phone was actually a great UI, fight me.

@andthisismrspeacock @Pwnallthethings

IT WAS WONDERFUL

I CANNOT SAY ENOUGH GOOD THINGS ABOUT IT

@SapphicLawyer Live tiles for your home screen, humanity will roast in the fires of hell for not embracing that concept.

@andthisismrspeacock

And firmware updates that added new free features!

AND BETTER MEMORY MANAGEMENT THAN ANDROID AT THE TIME

@SapphicLawyer nobody wants to say good things about MS, and I get it, I lived through WiNdOwS 2000, etc., but fuck if their shit doesn't work better than R_d H_t these days :/

@andthisismrspeacock

If anyone but Microsoft was attached, I'm convinced it would have survived. It was an albatross in terms of branding

@SapphicLawyer they should have given that shit away for free to compete with the "IPHONE 6 THIS IS GROUNDBREAKING" ok cool it has emojis, neato, but MS is now trying to be AWS and only cares about Azure :/

@andthisismrspeacock

As a leftist I hate to take sides on CEO quality but

Balmer > Nadella

@SapphicLawyer YES for sure. One wanted to build a competitive ecosystem and the other was like, eh. AWS is probably fine, let's do that.

@andthisismrspeacock

Surface Team working miracles all day every day and he's like "Haha ok you kids have fun while the grownups sell server time"

@SapphicLawyer Riiiiiiiiight right because everyone loves using Azure. It's like server core, "this should be your default", except, uh. all the features are missing?

@andthisismrspeacock

He strikes me as similar to the Twitter board that sold to Elon: utterly disinterested in money in the future if there's short sighted money to be made now.

@SapphicLawyer

Elon: sup nerds

Fired Twitter Execs: thank you for buying this crate of 8000 squirrels. Some of them are rabid. Bye.

@andthisismrspeacock

Elon was like so clearly a quick buck to them, damn the consequences.

And Nadella going all in on Azure feels like the same thing

@SapphicLawyer and they're mostly on-prem! like, this whole thing is gonna die because you fired engineering
@SapphicLawyer (the metro one, not the win95 based one, I'm not a fuking MONSTER)

@andthisismrspeacock

I kept using it until after they pulled the plug entirely.

@SapphicLawyer I begrudgingly gave up my nokia (whatever the fuck model # it was) when MS stopped patching it. I was sad. They blew it bad with that opportunity. But then, I work with MS engineering every day and I know they get the rug pulled out from under them in so many ways.

@andthisismrspeacock

They should've launched the OS faster, spent way more on marketing, and paid major apps to jump on board

@Pwnallthethings The company that I worked for a while back tried it with pretty solid backing from AT&T, Matsushita and Olivetti, but we failed as well...
https://hembrow.eu/personal/eo.html
EO Personal Communicators EO440 / EO880 running GO PenPoint

I was lucky enough to work for the manufacturer of one of the very first tablet computers. Look here to see where Apple got their 'original' ideas from.

@Pwnallthethings The fact that his cars are on the road while seemingly still in beta is all I need to know about a new phone from this guy. #NOPE
@Pwnallthethings
Elon: "Piece of cake. I am confident that I can whip up a phone brand with 10 models while solving world peace and ending hunger."
<3 days later>
"Oh, nothing I can steal? Look over there, I am confident that..."

@Pwnallthethings On the massive assumption he's not completely insane, I guess he would just slap a logo on an LG or similar Android phone, and give it an Android build with Aptoide instead of Google Play.

I mean, even that's insane but it ticks the boxes of being seen to do something and growing his cult, which seems to be the goal as opposed to actually running a sensible business.

@Pwnallthethings but, but, Elon said…he is a genius S/
@Pwnallthethings The way I look at it is at least this will keep him busy enough to get at least a little quiet on other things as the now-flaming website he bought goes down.

@Pwnallthethings
I hear nokia might have some old tech laying around he could buy and claim as his own...

I mean they'd love playing snake all day right?

@Pwnallthethings Also, wasn't there recently an attempt to produce an "anti-woke" patriot phone? Turned out to be an off-brand Chinese knockoff not marketed in the US running a re-badged android, as I recall. And just as secure and reliable as you'd imagine.
@mattblaze There's been a few. They're always rebranded $50 Chinese smartphones on Android with the appstore stripped out and then resold for $200+
@Pwnallthethings "Own the libs with all the things you currently dislike about Android and without the security updates or support"
@Pwnallthethings @mattblaze GRFTR-OS: Don’t woke up (alarms are experimental), the sun is all you need.

@mattblaze @Pwnallthethings was just having this discussion elsewhere and also landed on rebadged Android being the best case scenario also, which agreed, not a good scenario.

Even if he could make a new OS, and could attract engineers to work on it after all this mess. Who’s getting a phone that only runs Twitter because it’s not Android or iOS and so has no app ecosystem.

@mattblaze @Pwnallthethings There was also an "anti-woke" fintech startup called Glorifi...

You can imagine how it went- CEO drinking on the job, etc 🤣

@Pwnallthethings Plus he buys existing companies anyway. He won’t make a phone. It’s bluster.
@Pwnallthethings
Dunning Kruger style hubris by the nitwit who owns Twitter, on full display.
@Pwnallthethings compared to this, rocket science is easy.
@Pwnallthethings Exactly. I'm sure he's just blowing smoke out of his ass anyway, but there's no way he's doing a new phone, OS, App Store - the whole ecosystem.
@Pwnallthethings why would anyone trust this narcissist to not build spyware and tracking into a phone?
@Pwnallthethings I’m not on team Elon at all, but it is definitely feasible and relatively easy to put an phone on the market with a custom launcher and preloaded apps that update outside of Google Play. This is a far easier challenge than starting over or abandoning Google Services (like Huawei have been forced to do).

@jordan @Pwnallthethings

It is of course hard to know what the point of this would be. If it is to make Twitter available even if it is not on app stores, the easy/obvious thing is to just make it available for sideloading on Android.

If it is to build a whole new phone platform and app ecosystem to spite the companies that have rejected him... well yeah, that would be hilarious to see.

And most likely he doesn't understand enough to even distinguish between these.

@Pwnallthethings
Shhhh…. He’s seeing another shining object 🤫
