Do servers have private content only visible to that server’s users? In other words, am I missing anything from `uiuxdev.social` by not having an account with them? —— If I do need multiple accounts, won’t it be a pain to keep my friends lists in sync? #mastodon #mastodoninstance #mastodonculture #mastodonvstwitter #QuestionsMastodon #Mastodonhelp4newbies #mastodonhelp #mastodonquestions #mastodonquestion
@saturnbagel there will be some stuff that appears in that server's local feed that doesn't appear in your server's local feed - mainly the toots from accounts that no-one you or anyone else on your server follows or has boosted.
You can always browse that server's local feed by going directly to the server's website. You can follow any people you find that way then you'll no longer miss out on their toots. I reckon that's less hassle than maintaining multiple identities.
@wtfrank goootcha thanks! I recon then that each server decides if and how I can browse its local feed. - The uiuxdev site doesn’t seem to have a public feed, but it does have a public user registry so I can follow people that way. —— Is it possible for a user to restrict one or all of their toots to only be seen by users of the same server, or does following mean I see everything they post?
@saturnbagel ah yes that server is unusual in that it only has its federated feed on the front page but not it's local feed. First server I've seen do this! You can restrict toot visibility to named individuals or to followers but you can't restrict toots to the local server only. So if you follow someone you'll see everything of theirs you would if you were on the server with them.
