Hot take: Elon Musk turned up the heat too quickly and the frogs escaped before he could boil us. That impetuous impatience may have killed Twitter but saved democracy.

@jentaub Twitter will end up in the trash heap of history with AOL chat rooms & Napster

It won't happen overnight, but it's already started and it was inevitable

Big public figures, sports, TV shows, etc, are reluctant to start all over but they could build their followers back up over here at Mastodon in 2 weeks

@countyorange2030 @jentaub The one thing that’s started to happen that I hadn’t expected was the erosion of Twitters functionality. The TL doesn’t update well now. Most posts are 12 hours old. This is in addition to the increase in hate tweets.
@countyorange2030 @jentaub realistically, I understand why public figures can’t just jump over here - the DAU’s are a tiny fraction of the bird site - but smart ones will start to build their presence here now, so they can wean themselves off the other over time.
@countyorange2030 @jentaub I’m surprised that none of these ā€œbig brandsā€ aren’t hosting their own masto server instances and to attract their rabid fans into ā€œsafe communitiesā€ where they get to make the rules. Surely this iss cheaper than advertising, right?
@countyorange2030 @jentaub most I want to follow have gone to Post. Really frustrated cause I’m certainly not being let in there.

@georgetakei Already has 197K followers. Why they’re sinking with the Titanic is beyond me. Tell Mary to come over, please. I don’t know why she thinks it’s ceding ground. If everyone comes here, it’s win win win.

@countyorange2030 @jentaub i feel like the internet thrives on the start/rinse/repeat cycle of life. Little blue bird is just another of these and while it lasted quite awhile it was overdue, people are lazy they go with what’s normal, but the ā€œhiveā€ mind (no pun intended) thrives on change. I think this is a good thing! People will come around to change. It’s like the Titanic, people didn’t think it would sink either, but when the waters rushing the deck they’ll grab a lifeboat (mast).
