Reducing traffic speed from 50 to 30 km/h in cities is now implemented in the Netherlands. The big issue here is that road design should be in line with the allowed speeds. This means that you can’t have separated bike lanes om 30km/h roads. Many of the 50km/h roads are too congested to allow mingling between cyclists and automobiles. To overcome this paradox Leiden implemented these traffic lights. They turn red when drivers exceed the 30km speed limit. Resulting in an almost serene atmosphere.
@Gertjan Hulster Oo that sounds such a great idea 💚

@gertjanhulster From a French point of view why would you ride on the road (with speed limit to 30 km/h) when you have such nice bike lanes on both sides?

By the way are cyclists allowed to ride on the road here?

@jeanneavelo I think these are ‘mandatory’ bike paths. There is a small seperation - a ridge-for the cars. I think the road is too busy during peak hours. That’s why they choose to seperate traffic.
@gertjanhulster I much prefer dedicated cycle lanes and go out of my way to find them, but here in the uk the cycling infrastructure isn’t great. The debate and action is far too slow particularly in London #cycling
@Sally_Bridge It depends. If traffic is low I prefer cycle streets (Fietsstraat). These prioritize bike traffic over car traffic. Cars are not allowed to overtake cyclists. There are some examples on bus routes. So the busses stay behind cyclists. The Breestraat in Leiden is the most powerfull example.
@gertjanhulster I can’t get my head round the fact that bikes take priority over cars, we are a long way away from this 🫤
@Sally_Bridge This road is now converted to a cycle street: fietsstraat. This time done in red brick.
@Sally_Bridge @gertjanhulster Even though I get the feeling that our cycling infrastructures here (Quebec City where I live and Montreal as well) get more love than in the UK, we are still years, maybe decades from such a radical change. 🙄

OTOH, In a span of 8 years (from when I started partly #BikeCommuting), with a revised traffic code and an accompanying province-wide government ad campaign, I've witnessed true change in a majority of motorists' behaviour toward cyclists.
@gertjanhulster I first saw something similar in the Basque country. I vaguely recall it being combined with a pedestrian crossing, and defaulted to red, only turning green if nobody wanting to cross and driver below speed limit. Took a few moments to understand at first, but made sense.
@gertjanhulster Klopt het dat vooral Hans monderman de architect van dit denken is? https://systems.social/@djswagerman/109369796748915453

Watch systems thinker Hans Monderman talk about design of public space. https://youtu.be/bjBGokenEhQ What he says at 22:47 about liminal circles is very much applicable to digital public space; “What I discuss with my wife I won’t discuss with my children, and what I discuss with my children I won’t discuss with my neighbours” The whole talk is worth watching. #systemsThinking #Mastodon #LiminalCircles

@gertjanhulster
From what I've read, it must be a whole-system change

Putting in speed bumps, narrowing roads, and reducing the number of long, straight stretches of road will make ot structurally impossible to speed

This is a great start though! I applaud all places that take these kinds of steps!

@AlextheZee You are right. It’s laid down in the CROW leidraad (it’s a manual, not a law). We are now waiting for the guidelines for what us called GOW30: with heavy motorised traffic demanding fietspaden but the need for 30km/h because of gains in safety, livability and air quality. https://crowplatform.com
