The danger of hashtags (especially on Twitter)

Just a quick reminder for any #IrishTwitter users commenting on #EastWall that if you oppose the people using a particular hashtag, repeating it - even to disagree - will amplify the message of the very people you're opposing #Dublin #FarRight #NoHate #MastoDaoine

@theghostoftomjoad Admittedly, they are very useful here - but on Twitter, for the best of motives, people are tempted to rebuff hashtags used by far right groups, and can inadvertently get those hashtags trending. This is happening right now in Dublin with the use of the [hashtag] 'Ireland is full'. People have been pointing out that [hashtag] Ireland is full of love, welcomes etc - unintentionally helping the hashtag get visibility ...
@AlexK One drawback to #hashtags, aside from the aforementioned, is that they can draw unwanted attention. Some conversations go better with fewer participants. #smallisbeautiful
