Mark O - Hall monitor type
If you are new to #mastodon, migrating from #twitter and you love to post videos, please consider posting your video over at a hosting site such as Youtube or Vimeo (others exist). Then post the link, it should show and play in your Toot.
It saves your server from having to store and stream huge quantities of extra data.
I'm going to add into here that federated hosting exists in the form of #peertube as well which is worth a look at. https://joinpeertube.org/

@mojomoomoo I’m still exploring for sure, and haven’t tried PeerTube either TBH, but as a very long time practicioner of #SelfHosted services newly into the #fediverse I’m for-sure going to check it out.

@mojomoomoo This crosses a little bit into my professional space so I need to take some care here… The short answer is no.

But mp3’s are ubiquitous and Radiohead proved in 2007 with In Rainbows that #SelfHosted #music can be hugely successful for artists, especially if they already have a following.

The “creator’s" challenge in this climate is the same no matter what the medium is: You have to go to where your people are or find a way to draw them to you.

I smell #opportunity though!

@mojomoomoo Imagine for example, an instance centered around a band like an online fan-club. I don’t think it will be long before bands and musicians will start doing this especially now that there are multiple managed providers out there.

I only could’ve dreamed about having that capability in the ’90’s when I was trying to make it as a Rock Star™ – we had to send out physical post-cards to let people know when we had gigs near our fans!

@jsavin @mojomoomoo this needs to happen yesterday! @Bandcamp is great, but since they are now a subsidiary of epic, the #enshittification of the service feels more probable. A music-focused activity pub extension a la peertube would be great. Also what about podcasts?

@mojomoomoo Also, +1 to this. Server admins are no doubt struggling to keep up with storage and networking needs and hosting your videos outside of your instance will defintely help them to keep up, especially in the near-term!

@arale_xan At the end of the days it's down to an individual to choose what works for them . Uploading a video directly on here the video can easily be downloaded and reshared by another user. Hosting sites do offer a level of protection to stop this but there is then the issue of usage by the host which is detailed in their terms.

I’m mostly on the iOS phone app, and only see the link in the post, no preview thumbnail of the video, here. For most people to view, the video embedded in the post seems to be crucial, from my experience on twttr. As a short video enthusiast, I’ll have to figure something out…

Are you using the official mastodon app? If so it's not really recommend.
Access via browser seems best or one of the many other excellent apps.

@Richboy50 I don't believe it's banned depending on the server but obviously content warnings are an absolute must. Some of the peertube instances are open to it.
