Hive Social has no content moderation team. They also require full access to your phone's camera roll if you want to upload a picture, which means they can access all of your photos' location data.

I'm not saying that Hive Social does or is planning to do nefarious things with users' data, but the fact that they don't allow users to select what photos the app has access to is a huge red flag for me.

Never, ever give social media companies the benefit of the doubt.

Twitter competitor Hive Social run by 24-year old founder and 2 people

Hive is seeing downloads surge as some Twitter users look for backups amid Elon Musk's buyout, but it still lacks a content moderation team.

@aleen I sorta get the impression that they're WILDLY understaffed. They could take off if they had the means to repair everything about their app but as it stands I'm not holding my breath.
@fcr the have three people. It's untenable.
@aleen Oh. I didn't bother looking that up, but everything makes sense now haha.
@aleen @fcr apparently the names of the original two developers are hidden or basically unknown at this point as well unlimited data to anonymous developers is a big no-no for me.
@aleen not saying it's not a red flag, but that's a really common issue with a newly developed app. Which, to me, highlights my general concern about hive, which is the newness. :/
@aleen and they don't have a website version. That feels weird.
@regphunt I understand picking a platform and building there first, I guess, but if I wanted widespread adoption I'd definitely go web first.
@aleen the run has Just begun
@aleen they have no content moderators, which is what really makes me look askance at it. Mods are how you weed out the people harassing other people, and without that, it'll be a free-for-the-worst types of people to be hateful. The debacle with dot social is an example, and that seems to just be a case of too few mods relative to the size of the user base. None at all is an even bigger problem.
@aleen I see you mentioned the lack of moderators.
@kitrona yup! I think that people generally get why that's bad, which is why I decided to expand more on the photos permission point.
@aleen that makes sense, I just totally missed it. Reading too fast, sorry.
@aleen huh I have an account on there because a bunch of the #comicbook community went there. Your points about completely lack of moderation is concerning. It's only a matter of time before some truly horrific things get posted on there.
@Tweetfiction many of my favorite comics creators are there 😭
@aleen I think Hive is neck deep and don't know how to manage their situation. Post is likely going to be what replaces twitter, imo. I'd prefer it to be Mastodon, but I don't have high hopes.
@KeithHill @aleen
Looking at Post in beta and looking at mastodon, mastodon edges it. Why?
I like the federated approach with ability to choose or move to instances that are most comfortable for the user. This depth of choice doesn't exist with Twitter or Post. I also love there being no algorithm determining what I see and when. I get all the posts & I can filter if I want to.

@KeithHill @aleen
I think the mastodon experience is dependent on App used as well. I've tried a few now. Sticking with #tooot and #Tusky

Tusky is fabulous but it's missing translation that tooot offers, at least at the moment. You get federated & local plus a separate tab for all hashtag searches/follows. Tooot it's missing the separate hashtag tab & look & feel is good.

@paul_briley
Yes, I think the app one chooses to use has a lot to do with the user experience. I initially chose the official app and was so disappointed. I’ve been using the website mostly now and I love it.

@paul_briley @aleen I absolutely agree that, for me, this is preferred. But thinking about mass adoption and the people that struggle with new apps, idk if this fits.

Looking at a specific use case, if you share a toot and someone is on a different instance, they can't click on the link and interact.

@aleen Deactivated my account as soon as I saw that.
@aleen Well, that's a hard no from me.
@aleen
Hive feels like more Facebook.
@aleen I looked up Hive. Blockchain was mentioned. I decided not to touch it with a bargepole.
@PeteBleackley @aleen I think you ended up at hive.io not hivesocial.app, but I feel your dislike of blockchain anything. We partly missed to secure our investment (my previous startup) because I wouldn't want to use the blockchain. Multiple investors asked like "oh that's a blockchain use case" and my answer would always be "be it's not, since there are none except crypto currency". It's just not a thing 😅😔
@noctarius2k @aleen I certainly wouldn't use it for anything that stored personal data. Since data can't be deleted from blockchains, it would be a violation of every data protection law in existence.
@aleen Agreed. It's a privately owned company whose sole motivation is the profit motive at the end of the day. Having zero trust in a Capitalist enterprise should be the default imo.
@aleen is only the Instagram, tweeter and Tumblr version. Nothing new 🙄
@aleen Not mention that it's a single company. What's to stop Musk from buying it and folding everyone back into Twitter?
@aleen
Agreed they will monetize everything it's why they exist .
@aleen
Any company is a fungible asset.
Even if the founder has no nefarious purpose, there's nothing stopping a future owner from using data inappropriately.
@aleen think I'll be passing...
@aleen Hive Social keeps crashing down on me.
@aleen Oh yikes ... I don't like how all these companies know so much about us...
