Do you need to move to a new Mastodon server?

I have written a step-by-step guide on moving your account while keeping your followers and follows.

Tutoteket

@Patricia Denne hadde vore hendig på norsk også – kva er sannsynlegheita for at du tenkjer å skrive den på norsk?

Om ikkje, går det greit for deg om eg omset den til norsk (med henvisning til original og namn) på allheimen.no?

@tanketom bare oversett du! 😃

@Patricia Something that I ran into when moving servers is that any #hashtags that you are following will NOT make the move with you, so you will need to add all of those back on the new server.

#mastodon #fediverse

@greppy thanks! I’ll make a note to add something about that to the post!
Beautiful instructions. Thanks. @Patricia , I see that I messed up Step 5, and wish I had read your clear instructions. So then tried to figure it where I went wrong, and it somehow resulted in my not being able to use my password. I wonder why I get notified, when I try, that my account is fine., when the password doesn’t work. I enter this new account another way. Also have a 30 day restriction on the old account.

@Patricia
Genuinely asking since i am new here:
What is the need for changing servers? Isn't communication between servers allowed?

In the beginning I just randomly chose my server which happens to be maly.io

@LegitimatePM sometimes you end up on a server where moderation doesn’t align with your values, or maybe all your friends ended up on another server, or maybe your server is shutting down 🤷🏻‍♀️ or in my case you made a bunch of accounts because you didn’t know where you wanted to be and now you want to merge them
@Patricia Thanks for the clear summary. Would be so useful, though, if moving instances were actually just clicking a "move instances"-button after having created a new account on a different server. All of these steps of this convoluted process could in principle be automated.
@Patricia I'm on my own instance now. Thanks to you. 💚
@Patricia Part 2, Point 7, I requested my archive, it says "compiling your archive" for 7 minutes now. Should I wait and for how long? Thanks.

@leoljubicic66 I don’t know, and it doesn’t matter for the rest*, you can’t import it anywhere. At least not now. But if you want to delete your account this is the only way to get an archive of your posts.

* you will lose access to this account for 30 days so you might want to wait

@Patricia Thank you Patricia, I figured that out myself somehow. Anyway, archive archived, migration done! Thanks for the instructions.
@leoljubicic66 that was a terrible explanation.
If you want to delete your account, wait. I don’t know how long it takes. If you don’t mind waiting 30 days to download it, then just continue

@Patricia thanks for articles like this. Your one for migrating from the bird site made everything unbelievably smooth for me. I'm happy with hachyderm.io but if I want to migrate at some point*, this will be my go-to tutorial.

* Speaking of migration, aside from moderation stuff, what are the main differences? One thing I've noticed is that some accounts can post *much* longer toots than me - is that an instance thing?

@jake_arkinstall Yes, the default character limit is 500 per post but different instances can set it to a different number.
@Patricia thank you! i'm happy on samenet so far, but if i never need to, this will be useful. 💛
@Patricia Thank you so much for this! I used this literally last night!!
@Patricia If you were following someone that required her approval to follow, that person has to approve you following her again on the new server.
@Patricia Thank you for doing this, much appreciated!
I have two accounts on mastodon.scot but one of them is a "creative professional" style account and I wanted to move it to mastodon.art - however, that's closed to new accounts at the moment. I'm unsure about choosing a newer or smaller alternative without researching how well it's run first. No idea how to do that!
@Patricia Thank you for the write-up! I'll definitely get back to this bookmark if ever I need it. 🎉
@Patricia Thanks for sharing this. I used it to verify I didn't miss anything after switching servers earlier today. One thing that may be obvious to folks who've been here longer is that, while follows and followers will migrate over to the new account with these steps, posts do not. Or perhaps I'm still missing a step?
@msyvr unfortunately you can’t migrate posts today.
@Patricia how does content work though as you move?
@kiriappeee Your posts stay on the old server. That is how it works now. Maybe it will change in the future, but as far as I know no-one is working on it.
@Patricia does it make a difference which server you are on? Surely it depends on who you are linked to, or have I got it wrong?
@OMIT in social aspects it can matter: a themed server will have a themed local feed, moderation differs and it’s easier to see interactions between folks on your own server (examples likes).
@Patricia thanks for explaining, I’m ok where I am and seem to have plenty of input from others but was genuinely interested in how the community works.
