Don't ruin thanksgiving by talking about politics. Ruin it by asking that one special academic/writer family member how their manuscript is coming along
@phil_lol_ogist or my partner how her PhD applications are going.
@willigula a dangerous game indeed
@willigula actually to be totally candid I'd have been amazed if anyone in my extended family has known/thought to even ask. #Firstgenproblems
@phil_lol_ogist oof! I surely hope no one brings it up ๐Ÿ˜‚
@SR_Toliver SAME (and if any prospective editors are reading this, the ms is coming along just great ๐Ÿ˜…)
@phil_lol_ogist ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚
@phil_lol_ogist This is when I dearly want a "boost with comment" option. Yes indeedy, ask them how that manuscript is going, and who is going to read it. Yes, ask. Never. [Okay, I admit that I do ask certain people who are only too pleased to answer...]
@JenProf yeah, you've really gotta know the audience on this one
@phil_lol_ogist I enjoy seeking out the craziest person at the family gathering and baiting that person into a tirade about microdosing hallucinogens or the pervasiveness of the illuminati or something along those lines
@phil_lol_ogist
Or, from what I gather from those who've done it, how their PhD is coming along.

@phil_lol_ogist

But don't do it before pie.

Ruining pie means war.

@phil_lol_ogist

So right. "Idealism increases proportional to one's distance from the problem."

@phil_lol_ogist ask the postdoc when they're graduating from school, I got that a lot ๐Ÿคช
@dantheclamman @phil_lol_ogist My father once described my PhD scholarship as unemployment insurance for students.
Killam Trust Scholarships | Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research

@StanBeeler @phil_lol_ogist yes, Killam fellowships, endowed professorships are named after a Canadian Killam branch probably distantly related to me ๐Ÿ˜€
@phil_lol_ogist I was offered a book to read by a new author. Impressed I asked who the publisher was, he said "I'm self-published".
These are the people who wonder unseen in the shadows ready to pounce on anyone that looks even mildly willing to listen. I'm inviting several over for Christmas dinner then leaving shortly after everyone sits down.
@phil_lol_ogist this is a platinum post. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ˜‚
@phil_lol_ogist My husband used to throw himself between me and family members like he was falling on a grenade if the question "How is the book going?" came out of anyone's mouth at a holiday gathering.
@phil_lol_ogist thankful in my daughter will be in New York and not with us for anyone to ask her the dreaded dissertation question
@phil_lol_ogist I made that mistake once. Never again
@phil_lol_ogist This year, I'm that person. I'm about 2/3 of the way through converting my 50-page (not counting citations and diagrams) dissertation into a 20-minute oral presentation. Guess what I'll be spending Black Friday doing! ^_^
@phil_lol_ogist yes, that! Politics can suck my big toe!
@phil_lol_ogist โ€œanyway, will anybody read your stuff?โ€

@phil_lol_ogist

You may have to click my evil alter ego to see what he is saying. Sorry; it's just how Mastodon formats things.

@phil_lol_ogist I will literally fight the first person that asks me how my doctoral project is coming ๐Ÿ˜‘
@phil_lol_ogist as the years have passed feared left in the family who disagree. So I will discuss the fediverse
@phil_lol_ogist As if anyone in my family was an academic or writer! Ha. If only.
@phil_lol_ogist or the techie nephew how the startup is going?

@phil_lol_ogist

Don't ask me while I'm carving a turkey unless you crave the spectacle of seppuku.

@phil_lol_ogist isnโ€™t that when they say, โ€œgreat, Iโ€™ve based a character on you.โ€ And then tell you theyโ€™ll have to read it to find out which one. Not that Iโ€™d do that at all.
@phil_lol_ogist In the day, we used to ruin it by asking, "Did you pass the bar exam?"
@phil_lol_ogist I waited to quote this one to my husband until AFTER he had successfully defended his thesis. (Last week, hooray!)
