I grew up in the industrial North of England, the only star I saw was John Barnes, so a camping trip out to Ashburton Lakes after a move to NZ with its bortle 1/2 dark skies stunned me, and hooked me on astrophotography for life.

This is Lake Heron, gorgeous bit of back country not often visited by tourists.

@Rjdlandscapes This is so beautiful!!! Did you need to do any stacking etc to get this shot? Or was just a just point at the sky on a tripod and shoot?

@Howard Its a stitched pano (probably 40ish shots from mempry) at 50mm (using a robotic pano head), then batch converted/stitched/processed.

I dont generally stack my pano's but if its a single frame (rare for me) I do.

@Rjdlandscapes quite lovely! It's strange how the stars move quite a lot in the water but not in the sky.
@dwyerjp was a little stream outlet on the left so the water moved more so the reflections of the stars move!
@Rjdlandscapes years ago I went camping in Wooler, Northumberland. There are some places in the UK that have kept their dark skies!

@Allanahinnz yeah there are, harder to find and you've got to go to northern scotland to find really dark but I know a bunch of photographers that shoot in the Uk just fine

@Rjdlandscapes absolutely stunning! You’re making me want to be there!
@Rjdlandscapes I remember seeing John Barnes, jogging or shopping in the village local to my parents, I'd moved away by then. Whilst there were wide open skies & stars, it was close to busier towns. #Wirral
@NorthbutSouthbutNorth I used to live over the road from him (In west derby)! Very nice guy, Grobbelaar lived round the corner
@Rjdlandscapes absolutely beautiful.
I also grew up in the industrial wastelands of northern England.
The best views that I got were on holidays in either mid Wales or the in The Lake District.
I envy you.
(p.s my claim to fame is serving Phil DeFreitas at McDonald's 🤔).
@AnneDee Ah my Aunt had a caravan at a holiday park in North wales that was a well visited spot!
@Rjdlandscapes Stunning. This may be a stupid question, but does the sky look like this to the naked eye or are the stars only visible like this thanks to the camera?
@Rkfatheree oh you can clearly see the milky way etc but the camera captures more, and colour which our eyes dont see in low light
@Rjdlandscapes "the only star I saw was John Barnes..." 😂
