#hive is a joke
@xenova LMFAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
what a joke
i've seen people on twitter join for the sake of "claiming" a username and they can't even be claimed
what a joke
@Sqaaakoi it's so funny like, what's even the point of a handle system if these handles are not unique
At this point it's essentially just a discord tag except worse because it lacks the number discriminator
@xenova LMFAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
it's like youtube's old way of usernames but locked into a mobile app and even fucking worse because you have a username linked but it's just a display name (alternate) without special characters
such a fucking joke of an app tbh
@xenova Wait huh? What's the point of a username if it's not unique?
@zorinlynx @xenova Maybe so that when you type @/genshinimpact, it mentions all genshin impact fans at the same time? /s
@zorinlynx your guess is as good as mine, because it makes absolutely no sense lol
@xenova that would make it extremely difficult to find someone specifically on there. and with the genshin impact handles… definitely can see it being used to meme really

@xenova

3+ year old app
very new
always wondered why they used the word "unique" to describe handles for the past 20+ years

@xenova it's also venture capital funded~
don't understand why twitter people are moving to it, it's literally the same ownership model they hated twitter for

@FloatingGhost Their funding was actually my very first concern, as they've been pretty sketchy about it too. I made a post on it yesterday: https://wetdry.world/@xenova/109384716882181531

The fact they went as far as scrubbing mention of an angel investor to seem "smaller and humble" (at least that's the only reason I can think of) is suspicious has hell

Attached: 1 image I mentioned #hive social earlier, and since I've found some interesting details. For one, it's a venture capital firm selling "reservation for stocks" on wefunder. Basically meaning you spend a minimum of 100 US Dollars to reserve shares IF the company ever goes into the stock market. Another interesting detail is that they had scrubbed all mention of an angel investor they got, only for it to be added back to their website after people mentioned it. Pretty curious. While I'd hope they are not doing this with malicious intentions, it does put into question the trust of the platform. @xenova the same alarm bells went off in my head as well - i went digging and found that the founder has actually tried this "hive" thing multiple times before

this was his last attempt, 3million of VC money thrown away on a failed venture

Hive is a social networking site and application that connects people with others nearby that share their same interests.

Crunchbase
@xenova some people will do anything not to come to mastodon...
@xenova i'm guessing they have a number or something for the real user index

in which case that number needs to be plainly visible to avoid encouraging abuse and confusion and drama
@xenova Yea, it might not last.
@xenova what is this #hive thing even supposed to be?
@coffee Centralized social media platform much like twitter, although a lot of things surrounding it are pretty sketchy
@xenova hmm, why would anyone would want to use that? What does it have better when compared with Twitter (or any fediverse application)?
@coffee Beats me, honestly
I guess Mastodon is too confusing for some people so the closest thing to a twitter alternative is what they jump to?
That's my only guess
@xenova sure, having multiple people with the same handle isn't more confusing 😅
@xenova how. What.
Everything I read about that site just gets weirder and more wrong. How does that even work?! Non-unique usernames just sounds like chaos.
@xenova And people wonder why I'm ditching most, if not all, social media. I can do without this, thank you very much.

@xenova "this may change in the future", uhh, so how's that gonna work?

"Attention hivemind: All 423 (at)genshinimpacts, you must now fight to the death! 📣⚔🔫😭"

@xenova @temptoetiam Pas compris du tout de quoi il retourne.
@Alphonse

@themeowcate Ah !! Un bon gros défaut de conception !

Merci pour l'explication. J'ignorais tout de Hive.

@Alphonse

@shnoulle

@xenova so it isn’t an unique identifier 🤦‍♂️ how are they going to migrate this data to fix it?

@xenova You know that bit where a bunch of people rename and reprofile-pic to the same thing? Imagine that, but also with @'s...

It'd be worse than renaming during IRC!

@xenova I already thought it was not a great idea to allow non-unique nicks vs unique username back in the day, but now this is another level of fucked up entirely.
@xenova Wait, really? I am flabbergasted
@xenova That’s bizarre, I don’t even understand how that would work technically as there would be no reliable way to mention/message/tag a user. 🤷🏻‍♂️
@xmetal Internally the are tracked with IDs afaik, but yeah I don't know how this works for mentions
Leads me to believe it's a bug of some kind but then the question becomes "how do you fail this spectacularly"
@xenova I love the way this was supposed to be 10X better mastodon according to twitter
@xenova and here I was excited that I got one handle I always try, and fail, to get there.
@xenova I’m more than a little dismayed at all the authors and creatives I follow from the bird site who have been joining Hive as an alternative, because they like the interface better than other sites. If you listed all the pros and cons of every site in terms of handling a large influx of new users, it has the LEAST going for it. Why do people tend to pick the WORST possible option?
@Sedunker We could definitely use a study as to what makes people gravitate towards certain platforms
I think for Hive specifically it's that they've done a good enough job pandering to the masses by being similar to twitter while enforcing bans on polarizing figures, which is the opposite of what Elon is doing
Of course, it would be ideal if people did research and looked into the platform's issues first, but that's clearly not what happened judging by the fact that Hive has reached a million users
@xenova what a fuckin mess lmao
@xenova lol wtf???? do they really think this is going to work out at all??
@xenova love that it's not considered a problem 😄
@xenova That sounds like a very big problem.
@xenova the more I think about this the funnier it gets, does everyone in that user name get every notification? how did they even build it like that????
@xenova "we know our game consistently crashes entire pcs when you exit the tutorial, but the game's still very new and this is subject to change"
@xenova Plus, there's the whole "it's being run by two unknown blokes" thing. And the whole "what about all of the legal issues?" thing, like DMCA...
@xenova so why have I seen several people saying they can't make an account and asking hive to free up their account name, then hive agreeing and claiming to have done it? Genuinely don't understand how both could happen unless they were just flat out lying
@nihilarc Most likely a glitch when it comes to multiple people having the same handle
However taking how basic of a feature this is and how fundamental handles are to social media, I think everyone can agree they should've checked for something like this
@xenova for the F sakes. Trollers can even ruin this.
@xenova dont understand why this wouldn’t be a high priority for them smh
@xenova Bruh wtf how tf u supposed to @ someone if there can be multiple of them
@xenova it looks like this has been addressed. My friends have been testing it all afternoon and you can no longer make duplicate user names.
