I would like to be able to make recommendations to BIPOC who have been scared off by the (non)moderation of mastodon.social and some of the other bigger instances.

If you know of an instance where there are non-white people who are doing the moderation (and also that the moderation is good) please let me know.

Thank you, comrades! <3

@serenissima I believe rage.love might be a good one. And blacktwitter.io
@erinfulmer @serenissima I saw a thread some days ago. Maybe there you can find some links: https://chaos.social/@aseva/109275328599973516

momentan fühle ich mich noch wie die einzige schwarze im mastodon. wirklich keine neue erfahrung no worries. aber ich eröffne mal #blackmastodon - vielleicht finden sich so leute

@serenissima Welcome to the Fediverse! A good way to start is hashtags in your profile and on posts then search/follow hashtags to find others with common interests and use a tool like fedifinder.glitch.me/ to find your twitter crowd here. Perhaps some hashtags might help find those instance admins!

@shelenn Lol. I’ve been here since 2017, but thanks… I’m actually looking for a specific kind of instance, not my friends from Twitter. Thanks!

@reviewsandreadathons

I dont know about the mods for blacktwitter.io but it seems to be a great community. i peruse to keep abreast of things, i haven't looked at qualifications to join the instance, but there's a lot of quality ppl and posts. (not sure if its for employees of twitter or if it is to compare to the community there, haven't read the instance about page yet)

@serenissima @SpaceTides I can't speak as a user of the instance, as a white person, but there is blacktwitter.io that Black run

@serenissima some folks might be interested in weirder.earth

We defederate from servers often which some people dislike, but it's part of making it a safer place and often because of our BIPOC moderators.

It may not be for everyone but I recommend they check out the server rules and also our blocklist to see if they would be cut off from any people they specifically would want to talk to https://weirder.earth/about

weirder.earth

Hometown is adapted from Mastodon, a decentralized social network with no ads, no corporate surveillance, and ethical design.

Hometown hosted on weirder.earth
@RadiantEmber Oh, yay, I’m so glad to hear this is a BIPOC moderated instance. Everyone I’ve ever talked to from there has been very respectful.
@serenissima
Blorbo.social (a fandom-focused instance) has one POC on our mod team. We hope to add more as our instance grows.
@serenissima
Oh of course you should check out blacktwitter.io !

@admin @serenissima
I keep forgetting that exists now!

i'm sorry to say it, but they likely have some moderation challenges. It's a completely new instance that already has over 1000 members. They're likely to be still setting up a mod team and figuring out how to run it.

Give it a bit to get through the start up hiccups and it'll probably be awesome, but if you want to be sure of good moderation, they may not be the best right now

@serenissima therein lies the rub, doesn't it?

big instances with open registration tend to be horribly run, and the staff tend to be very homogenous

instances with good moderation, and those run or modded by POC, are often small and registration is limited or closed, due to having to deal with the poor moderation of the rest of the fedi

@extinct God, if this isn’t the gospel truth…

@serenissima
I know that writing.out and rage.love have a Korean mod/admin (same person) who I trust. I believe that rage.love has other non-white mods, but don't recall for sure

I believe weirder.earth has several non-white mods, but again can't say for sure

ubiqueros.com is a misskey (I think) instance admin'd by a Black person. Ro is good people with no shits to give for anyone's bullshit. No idea if it's open for new registration

@serenissima bantu.social is a Brazilian non-white instance
@serenissima For those who speak portuguese there's bantu.social.
@serenissima For Brazilians I suggest bantu.social, which is exclusive for non white people (but I think they are requiring invitations now)
@serenissima We ( @xiyudu ) are non-white admins! But our server is academic-only.
@xiyudu @kinozhao Specifically philosophy only, or any academic subject?
@serenissima @xiyudu Any academic subject is fine
@serenissima
Some people that I follow are on blacktwitter.io - a mastodon server set up with the intent of giving the Black Twitter community a new home. But a lot of people from Twitter did not make an account their or are at least not actively using it.
@serenissima Makes me sad to read that people feel bad due to the lack of moderation. 😞
@serenissima idk if registration is open but nitecrew.rip
@serenissima I've boosted this because I think it is really important.
I'd also welcome more diversity on our little instance, particularly in moderation so that we can make better decisions.
@serenissima my instance is very small and so the moderation “team” so to speak is just me right now, but registration is open (pending approval). i am Indigenous and about half of the (again, very small) userbase on mage.town at present are BIPOC
@lore Hey, if the team is one person and that one person is white, then the team is non-white! Thank you for the reply, and good luck moderating this influx!

Hey, #BlackMastodon, in light of some of what I've been seeing regarding bad-call bans on some of the larger instances, I'm hoping to see if there's suggestions to relay for people who are being discouraged by that behavior for friendlier/smaller instances?

@serenissima "waves hand vigorously" Reporting for duty, ma'am....although, I'm the only mod here.

I've created a small, incomplete, list of instances with moderators of color. The list and suggestions became to much to keep up on my own, so here is a Google document, https://docs.google.com/document/d/12pTmSMpq8lMYyYlHT25DgTmdMmE6ysUyRHGiq-E4XdQ/edit?usp=sharingp Here's how to move accounts and take your followers with you https://docs.joinmastodon.org/user/moving/ #BlackMastodon #BlackTwitter #BlackFedi #FediTips #TwitterMigration #MastoAdmin

@serenissima Apologies - it was a copy paste I use with a lot of new migrants when I see no hashtags on a post looking for others.
