EDIT: reread this updated toot and reboost it if you agree.

By unbanning Trump (EDIT: and by now countless other trolls and known fascists, as well as banning left wing accounts) Elon Musk is purposefully making Twitter (and by extension the world) an unsafe place for marginalized people all over the world.

We should not simply flee from Twitter, but actively work together to break its power.

Consider your stay on Mastodon a political statement, because that's what it really is. And consider not just focussing on your own comfort, away from the ruckus of hateful tweeters, but also contributing on building a lasting infrastructure were all people can be safe. And you don't need to be technical to do that. Promote using the Fediverse as a political and philosophical necessity.

It should be clear to you by now that media (be it social or otherwise) in corporate hands can never be truly safe. Maybe safe enough for you, but not safe for everyone.

We need decentralized, community owned, non-profit media, with a likewise technical infrastructure.

For safety.
For equality.
For democracy.
For freedom.

For our future.

EDIT: The war for safe social media cannot be won on a billionaire owned for-profit platform. Our battle is fought by creating our own thing. Shaping our own world.

So, while you're here

Alt-txt your images, to keep Mastodon accessible.
If you just joined, and are on a big server, consider moving to a small instance. The power of the Fediverse is decentralization. Big servers are vulnerable, harder to moderate and therefore less safe.
Send some money to your local server to keep things afloat.
Punch a nazi if you get the chance.

Wow.

Over 750 boosts and still going strong.

Per Twitter custom I should now link you to my Soundcloud, but I don't have one.

But here's something I did in a previous life, about 20 years ago.

Some will call this idea to destroy and devalue twitter by investing our time, money and eyeballs in federated social media an anarchist move, or a socialist idea.

They may not be wrong, but first and foremost its a profoundly human thing to do. And a kind thing. A rightheous thing.

Get on board. And get other people to quit corporate social media. Especially Twitter.

@determinerik Totally agree. Only problem is, they have the ease of use and big numbers factors weighted against us. Can't tell you the number of good people who tried and baled out of Mastodon b/c they thought it too complicated or too difficult to gain a following within the distributed server format.
@determinerik Some might say that socialist and human/kind/righteous are synonyms. At least that’s what I try to tell the “conservatives” in my family. “Woke” is just another word for kind. Or “wokism” is just another word for love. And socialism is just a society based on love. Where all people, as well as the planet, are more important than profit.
@determinerik Is there an overview somewhere available of the # of users per server?
@roelgrif @determinerik instances.social will show use counts in its search results. If you go to the about page for any instance I think you can see active user counts there too
@jeffer @determinerik Thanks! Helpful indeed, especially https://instances.social/list/advanced#lang=&min-users=&max-users= because otherwise you won't see servers not open for registration.
Mastodon instances

@determinerik how do you change instances?
How to migrate from one server to another

With the sad news that KNZK was shutting down we thought it might be useful for people to have a refresher on the features that Mastodon has built in that make moving instances easy and painless. Backing up Your Data Data export If you are moving to a new instance the first thing you will want to do is to get a backup of all of your data. Thankfully this process is painless with the Data Export tab under the “Import and Export” page.

@Nil_WHU @determinerik
I really have no idea what you mean or how to do this. I can't even find where to close my twitter account . Help!

@determinerik

I respect your views and values, but I am just a regular internet user who wants to keep connected to the people I like or find interesting.

I honestly didn't move to Mastodon for political or philosophical reasons. If people did and do so with that intent, that's all fine.

But please do not put words in my mouth or push your own political beliefs onto me or others. That's EXACTLY why many of us left the Blue Bird in the first place.

I hope you understand.

Peace! ! ✌️

@tonyvisualizes I'm not pushing anything. I'm asking for solidarity.
@determinerik Totally agree on that. Anything in the hands of rich people only is against to the concept of freedom, by definition.

@determinerik The same way leaving Livejournal when Russia bought it and MySpace when Rupert Murdoch bought it were political statements?

Faceboot has been a cesspool for decades and has 6 times the userbase. If Cambridge Analytica wasn't a call to action, waiting out the Boomers seems like the most viable strategy. (Midpoint of Boom was 1955, post-covid USA average lifespan is 77, thus LD50 of Boomers is 1955+77=2032.)

@determinerik while I strongly agree with you (I have reblogged this post) I cannot help wondering how large-scale moderation would work here.
Who is going to decide what is right or wrong? Would Mastodon become a forest of independent instances because rules are different on each one and they “ban” each other?
What is it going to happen if Mastodon really takes off and Governments start getting “interested”? I would rather not see another crackdown!!
@dguerri some instances will block others or defederate, but I think most will be try to avoid that. There really will be no large scale moderation, which I think is a good thing. As soon as you upscale something like moderation, it becomes a position of power, and not only does that corrupt, it will attract the wrong kind of people.
@determinerik fair. But then what would happen if Trump start posting here?
If you have enough supporters spread in many instances, you can get quite a far reach... This is not a problem with ~8M (sharded) users, but it could be a big deal with 100M or 1B

@dguerri most instances have clear TOS and rules. If Trump, or someone of similar ilk, were to come, a lot of servers would block him, shielding off all of their users from his posts. Any server that would still allow him would risk getting defederated, so most won't be too keen.

I really think decentralization, with more and more small servers, will make this problem easier, not harder.

@determinerik I hope so but I am not convinced.

Sorry, I am not trying to downplay Mastodon or the federated model in general.

But Trump is an easy case because he's already "burned".
I am thinking about the new one, or basically just some random racist, or homophobic, or pro-guns, ... getting popular with populism.
It's not an obvious problem and, assuming the platform becomes _really_ popular, the federated nature of this social will make it harder to contain as individual moderators will have individual views.

@dguerri @determinerik more brains and more different ideas of how to run things, trump types wouldn’t pass the test.

@determinerik

i kind of don't like this; i want to use Mastodon because it's Mastodon, not because its "not twitter". fuck twitter, i don't want to define my actions in opposition to it.

@tabletophotdish I don't mean to compare it like that. Mastodon is its own thing, as is the Fediverse. But recent developments at Birdsite show us how badly we need things like Mastodon, and how vulnerable we are when we rely on centralized, corporate services.

@determinerik
Boycott Tesla.

Musk controls Tesla cars and their maintenance in much the same way he now controls Twitter. Why would anyone that should now know his attitude toward people he has power over want to put cash money into a Tesla?

@determinerik Elon makes money on the number of users. I won’t support or enrich an evil human being like Elon. I deactivated my account.

@determinerik I had a presence on Twitter but didn't use it as a musician. To many music fans who are dear to me were excluded. Be it LGBTQIA+ or whoever.

As a musician, I want everybody to have equal access to art. One should not be excluded to speak about art.

I am a pretty standard and average person and so I never suffered from any exclusion. But friends did. I want my friends to be happy too.

Love your post, you can express this so clearly when I struggle to find the words. Thank you

@determinerik
スターウォーズみたいになってきた。
帝国軍vs反乱同盟軍。

It's like starwars.
Empire vs Rebel Alliance.

@barlow2001 @determinerik but without the casualties, I hope?

@determinerik I don't really much like either model of moderation - centralized corporate policy motivated primarily by profit, or decentralized moderation by peers and community. The decentralized model seems superior but it's not clear exactly how or how well it functions and it seems prone to a politically correct well-intentioned mommy effect.

Moderating people's words is hard. I guess it's up to us here so I had better bone up on what's ok and what's not ok.

#moderation #censorship

@determinerik #Fediverse is a useful concept I think, if it can scale. Interesting experiment. But where is the sustainable business model? How do the developers and server admins keep body and soul together. If it’s a hobby, it won’t scale.
@kathrynlaskey @determinerik I've seen discussion stating that medium size instances have a cost of about 5c/user/month. You don't need a lot of users to be contributing something minimal, say $1-$8/month, to cover costs.
@determinerik @kudra does that also compensate the admins time?
@kathrynlaskey @determinerik I guess that depends how the admins value their time and how much admin time is needed, which are both going to vary.
@determinerik
I am definitely on Mastodon as a political statement, and refraining from posting on twitter for the same reasons

@determinerik trump's not gonna post there. He already has other platforms.

It's Musk being a sad loser.

@determinerik I can subscribe to this. Seems to be my motivation lately.
@determinerik Iedereen die 'het nog even aanziet' op twitter, lees dit eens goed.
@determinerik Absolutely agree. Under Musk, Twitter is set to become an absolute sewer of hate speech and misinformation.
@determinerik I agree, it’s becoming harder and harder to accept any justification for people staying on that site. Whatever the reason or excuse they are enabling Musk and his bigotry and hate. At some point they will all become complicit.
@determinerik Yaaaaaaaaaaasssss!!!!!
@determinerik Respectfully disagree w/the stay and fight idea. Wether you're fighting or agreeing staying contributes to the site. Your clicks your energy will fuel the site. The power is with us, not the platforms.
@determinerik I’m really more interested in NOT dealing with the bird site or the orange clown. It just ratchets up the tension. I don’t need it. That’s why I left.
@determinerik build here AND protect communities still there. And hit the bird in the advertising revenue.

@determinerik

That is one reason I am active on Mastodon and trying to help new people adjust. The other is that the conversations here are more interesting with numerous different voices with different takes. The new onslaught of people moving from Twitter has brought more Black voices here, which I am glad to sss. I hope they will feel free and be welcomed to join into these conversations.

@determinerik I figure Trump has a vested interest at this point not to boost a competitor to his own dying Truth Social. That said, it's far more troubling Musk wants to let all the booted racists and cranks back on. My days on Twitter are number when they start showing up again en masse.

@determinerik
That would solve some issues. Another would be to introduce a Community based set of standards that applied to every aspect of our lives.
Including strict, unwavering rules and punishments to keep those standards from being gradually whittled down by corrupt law makers.

* Which is what has happened over decades, centuries and millennia
By Queens & Kings. By Religeous Leaders. By Politicians bribed, extorted or with intent to corrupt.

We, as a Society, know what is required. How to acheive it has been the reason for past, bloody wars.
How much are we prepared to pay for the hopeful return of decency, honesty & safety?

A sad question with no happy answer, I think.

@determinerik

I did share it for others to see. However, I do not feel compelled to take EM's structure down. That concept is a little akin to staying w/an abuser in hopes he will finally see the abuses he's been afflicting on me with renewed eyes. For the record, that never happens. Get out and stop allowing the abuser to treat you like sh!t! #Mytwocents

@determinerik Agreed. The idea that people can fight Musk and the far right on a platform where they set and change the rules as they see fit is absurd.

@determinerik Couldn't agree more. Great article exploring this very point here by @Pwnallthethings

https://www.pwnallthethings.com/p/twitter-was-special-but-its-time

Twitter was special. But it's time to leave

Tweets were always short-lived. Turns out Twitter was too.
