Just a big Thank You to all those using image descriptions here and a reminder to those who haven't started doing this yet to please do so.

Believe it or not, there are a lot of people who are blind or visually impaired here, and we really appreciate you describing your images.

For me, this is important because I can't recognize faces or facial expressions well, and sometimes I can't tell what's going on in a photo with too much chaos or too much detail. Please feel free to ask quetions about that.

@DaniMarieAUC good day, as you Toot about alt text, I'm still very new to using them.
Are there any tips to what a very good description should look like? I always try to tell what I see, but I can understand that I say too much or too little on things in the image.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated, as I want to include the visual I pared people! Thank you in advance.

@Cynni absolutely. There is no set in stone set of guidelines for alt text. The important thing is really just to try. One technique is just to imagine you're describing something to a friend over the phone. What parts of the image are most important? What do you love about it? What is eye catching? You don't have to describe every single detail.

Definitely always include any text in the image though. Otherwise, you can use the questions above to get the important bits in there. Don't stress about it too much. The more you do it and the more alt text you see, the easier it gets to pull the important bits from an image.

@DaniMarieAUC Thank you! They seem like simple tips but still, if you overthink it, you miss them. So I really appreciate it and I'll try to keep those questions in mind when alt texting my next image. 😊 Your help is really appreciated!
@Cynni thank you for asking. Honestly, it's lovely to see people be curious about it. I'm an over thinker, so I can appreciate how easy it is to overthink everything...
@DaniMarieAUC I thought it's better to ask and improve myself than to just do and hope it's OK...
I want to help make the FediVerse an inclusive and safe environment for everyone, so if I can write better alt texts to help, I will. 😊 Thank you again!
@DaniMarieAUC @Cynni thank you for asking, and thank you for the awesome answer. I’ve been adding to all the media i’m sharing. The bot is fabulous.
@DaniMarieAUC The platform devs need to make this easier, and more obvious, to implement, and at any time. It's not now, and if one is not a techie, the phrase #alttext is just more gibberish.
@trumpresistance you'll notice that I used the term Image Description above for this precise reason. It's never perfect on any platform, but we can try. That's all I'm saying here. I appreciate those who are putting in the effort, and I would love to see more people do that as well.

@DaniMarieAUC if I may, because I need to be educated in this area: are there key words that are helpful?
Sometimes I post images of my art, which is abstract. I tend to use bright and saturated colors.
I’m not sure if saying that would be helpful or feel insulting.

I would like to be respectful when adding a description.

@prodygy of course! I think a lot of people have this same worry! You can use colors to describe images, along with words like warm, cool, vibrant, muted, soft, etc.

When it comes to abstract art, you can also describe the vibe of the art as you see it. This is especially true if it's your own art imo.

The important thing to know here is that most people who are blind and visually impaired either have some remaining vision or have a memory or general idea of colors and shapes. The percentage of people with absolutely no vision is very small.

Don't stress about it. Using color words and descriptive words won't offend the blind and visually impaired community. We all still use normal language terms like see and watch even if we're listening to visual media. I hope that's helpful!

@DaniMarieAUC thank you!!! That was quite helpful.
@DaniMarieAUC @ajcan I'm also visually impaired, and love everything about this post. Particularly, how polite and respectful every reply is...not used to that, but LOVING it! 😄
@prairielilly @ajcan isn't it weird and absolutely wonderful??? I can't express how happy that makes me, especially lately.
@DaniMarieAUC @ajcan I'm amazed every day honestly. This is what SOCIAL media should be !! 😄
@DaniMarieAUC help please! I’m not sure if my alt text is showing up??
Last image posted should contain the following:
Pink timber breakfast tray with a large and small thermos; French coffee press; bone china teapot; 2 fine bone china tea cups and saucers; 2 water bottles and earphones
@bronwynclee I went and looked. It's there! I think there are some inconsistencies with how it shows up from app to app and instance to instance, but I'm pretty new here, so I can't say difinitively.
@DaniMarieAUC thanks very much, I appreciate you letting me know

@DaniMarieAUC

Thank you for the reminder!! Training myself to remember

@DaniMarieAUC I've seen the bot pop up a few times, but not sure if I'm doing it right. A step-by-step 'How to' would be helpful.

@Moocher that does sound helpful. I haven't used the bot myself.

I will say, how your image descriptions show up later depends on the app you use. They don't show up at all on the standard Mastodon app.
