For those of you who like flowcharts, behold: a flowchart of the visibility of a post/toot to Mastodon!

10 quick Mastodon tips

There has recently been a huge rush of people trying out Mastodon. This is also noticeable in the number of people reading my earlier Mastodon Guide. I wanted to take this opportunity to provide a brief list of usage tips that I wish I had at hand when first setting

Axbom β€’ My Next Heartbeat

@ryanschultz @axbom

In other words, a great way to miss a lot of messages that would interest me. For example, I can't follow people who I know are here because I can't find them.

@StillUnsocial @axbom If you want, you can send me a message asking for certain people, and I can boost it. Also, hashtags are your friends; use them liberally to find like-minded people (including in your profile).
@ryanschultz @axbom Thank you for the offer, I'll consider it. πŸ˜„
@StillUnsocial @axbom Also, the single best way to find out if someone is on Mastodon is to contact them via email, Twitter (if they still have it), etc.

@ryanschultz @axbom

If I don't know someone I wouldn't email them, but I have told a couple of people on Twitter that I couldn't find them despite searching their details on Mastodon.

@ryanschultz @axbom it’s pretty I have no idea what it means 😬
@jayarnold @axbom If it doesn't help you, ignore it πŸ˜‰ everybody learns in a different way!
@ryanschultz @axbom I wasn’t complaining I’m not an expert I was asking for help. But no worries thanks.
@jayarnold @axbom Sorry, it's hard to get nuance from text chat, LOL! Please accept my apologies πŸ˜€
@ryanschultz @axbom I very much appreciate that. Thank you πŸ™ŒπŸΌ

@ryanschultz @axbom

I enjoy & like that we are learning a new platform.
it feels like we're all early to the party.
Twitter got so old, stale, repetitive & boring, I'm still actively over there inviting tweeps to #Mastodon

@DifferentCat71 @axbom Agreed! I was able to drag over about 30 of the people who followed me on Twitter over to Mastodon, which I will take as a small win πŸ˜€
@ryanschultz @axbom personally, I prefer venn diagrams. But this'll do.
@ryanschultz @axbom This graphic explains well why Mastodon will never reach the masses. πŸ€–

@Wolic

Have you tried making a flowchart for Twitter? πŸ˜‰

Honestly I'm not sure Mastodon is meant for the masses…

@ryanschultz

@axbom @ryanschultz The comment was not entirely serious. πŸ˜‹
But you quickly realize that it is very technology-heavy here and people who just want to post and consume content are easily confused. Whether that is good or bad, others may decide. πŸ€“
@Wolic @axbom I think it's also a language thing; @axbom is Swedish I believe. Sarcasm does not translate well when we communicate via text chat! πŸ˜‰
@ryanschultz @axbom cool! What's the Federated timeline? What would I click to see it? (I use the Mastodon app and Tusky.)

@JBF

I don't use any of the apps, but I would imagine there is a globe icon to select for the federated timeline, as that is what it most commonly is marked with.

🌍

@ryanschultz

@axbom @JBF @ryanschultz
Yes, federated timeline also a globe in the Vivaldi app as well.
@ryanschultz @axbom I suppose that last part could be considered an β€œoderless toot” then? 😁
Thank you for the flow chart! It is helpful.
@ryanschultz @axbom
Thanks, that's very helpful for my understanding.
@axbom @ryanschultz
This is great! I didn't realize a toot wouldn't show up in my federated timeline unless someone in my instance follows that user.
