*quietly* I don’t want more discipline-specific instances, I don’t even have a discipline anymore.
@Halperta less Discipline instances, more Punish instances 😅
@Halperta I picked one cause I was feeling lazy but I'd really rather just have the birdsite back
@Halperta Lots of people seem to have misunderstood the value of not being physically close with your field.
@Halperta *waving from over in general-purpose instance land*. I'm really torn. This whole place seems set up to work best with "multiple small instances" but chopping people up into mutually-trusting groups seems very fraught.
@Halperta Would it be fair to call it a focus? I know my students don’t get the concept of a discipline because in Native American culture, everything is connected.
@schoolingdiana i guess I was talking specifically about disciplines among the academics on mastodon.
@Halperta Yeah the reason I wanted this particular instance is because I too don't really fit anywhere except 'humanities'.
@Halperta
@shengokai
I'm in medicine and I'm hanging out with the infosec folks. I used to be in IT ages ago. Go where stuff is interesting.
@Halperta especially when you can follow hashtags so it is easy to get content from different accounts in your home feed.
@Halperta Literally just presented on undisciplined work at a conference yesterday. This is an oasis in the anxiety!
@Halperta Endlessly frustrating tendency of the humanities
@foundhistory hard to resist breaking down our work into dated categories defined by institutions structured around finances
@Halperta @anildash one of the clients I use (Tusker) has a fascinating feature that allows me to subscribe to (and switch over and read) the entire timeline of a different federated instance. Like a superpowered list. Quite interesting.
@SamTheGeek @anildash intriguing 🤔
@Halperta @anildash Unfortunately due to Mastodon’s limitations (thus far) you can’t really reply to any posts in those other instances but I’m not sure that’s entirely a bad thing.
@Halperta Hanging with the generalists...
@Halperta I will never teach in my "field" again, but I'm an expert in Comp 1 and 2 now!

@Halperta big same. History, but also education. Also work for a land trust. Also LGBTQ+ issues. Also politics. Also---

I don't want to be siloed. I don't want other people to be siloed away either. That's why I picked a general purpose server.

I did use a tool that looks at followers/followed accounts on the birdsite to find people who put mastodon account info in their profiles. Combined my two accounts into one big account here. Ya'll get all of me.
