20 November 1945 | The 1st Nuremberg Trial started. 24 political & military leaders of the German Third Reich were tried. Twelve were sentenced to death.

The purpose of the trial was not just to convict the defendants but also to assemble evidence of Nazi crimes, offer a history lesson to the defeated Germans, and delegitimize the traditional German elite.

Thank you for being here and continuing to share on this platform. We must never forget!

@auschwitzmuseum Iโ€™ve made the decision to leave Twitter. Iโ€™m glad to see the Auschwitz Museum is here.

The work you do is too important to be lost in the chaos.

@auschwitzmuseum thanks for reminder ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿพ

@auschwitzmuseum

I sadly took quite a while until this trial had the desired impact in Germany. Most of the folks who were not hanged were pardoned in the early 1950s under massive pressure from the conservative West German establishment. It took until at least the 1970s and 1980s since the verdicts were generally accepted by the German public.

@auschwitzmuseum I am reading a book called The Escape Artist by Jonathan Freeland, I am still learning new horrors of what the Nazis did to the Jewish people.

@auschwitzmuseum I heard #BenFerencz speak when he was 99. The horror of the war was still with him.

This is what the trials of Donald Trump impeached former Pres. should accomplish. His sentences should represent a warning to others. Democracy is in the balance and may not survive.
@auschwitzmuseum I do remember being shocked when a teacher told me "remember, the Holocaust happened in color" - it had never occurred to me that my internal vision of it was black and white
@auschwitzmuseum maybe also highlight democracyโ€™s triumph over fascism and arbitrary Justice
