20 November 1945 | The 1st Nuremberg Trial started. 24 political & military leaders of the German Third Reich were tried. Twelve were sentenced to death.

The purpose of the trial was not just to convict the defendants but also to assemble evidence of Nazi crimes, offer a history lesson to the defeated Germans, and delegitimize the traditional German elite.

I sadly took quite a while until this trial had the desired impact in Germany. Most of the folks who were not hanged were pardoned in the early 1950s under massive pressure from the conservative West German establishment. It took until at least the 1970s and 1980s since the verdicts were generally accepted by the German public.
