a new intro for a new server:
i'm a writer & DJ on #freeform #WFMU. i co-host the official #gratefuldead podcast & enjoy the half ironic #deadfreaksunite tag. i've written books on #yolatengo, #psychedelics, & #peteseeger & #theweavers, & currently (slowly!) researching a new history of grey area recordings, with fan-recordists of #radio, #bluegrass, #opera, #jazz, unofficial #mixtapes, #DJ sets, & much else. here for #musodon, really.
@bourgwick after dead tour some of us got into the rave scene a bit, ahem. Of course the crazy deadheads started taping the DJ sets. Once the DJs found out they always wanted a copy of the tape. Very grey indeed.
@InstituteJerry oh cool! i will be hitting you up about this!
@bourgwick trying to understand why you're not in my feed though I'm following you. Is the feed server-specific?
@DadaStrain it depends which feed you're looking at. i should be in your home feed, but not your local feed.
@bourgwick just had to let you know that the Dead podcast and your presentation style in particular, is really super. My lockdown and dog walks were aided and abetted listening to you. ✌️😎
@bourgwick Love the grey recordings project. Have you delved into the vault of fan tapes donated back to #WFMU? Also, I got some stories from fans who taped cuts from one of the earliest #hiphop radio shows, in the late 1970s, in Erie, PA of all places.
@erazlogo my research is still combing through earlier periods, so haven't gotten there yet, but will absolutely be looking for info about #hiphop tapers! that sounds perfect. just came across this cool looking new book which i look forward to reading looking for similar stuff. https://www.dukeupress.edu/breaks-in-the-air

@bourgwick Oooh, thank you that book looks great! There is also this on radio taping: https://www.taylorfrancis.com/chapters/edit/10.4324/9781003002185-45/taping-radio-zita-joyce
TAPING radio | 45 | Recording memories | Zita Joyce | Taylor & Francis

The chapter explores the practice of taping radio shows on cassette as a now largely historical audience practice of producing media objects, capturing time

@bourgwick nice bumping into you here!
@bourgwick - kinda cool - just joined Mastodon and searched for gratefuldead - found heads.social, then the very first post I found was yours and funnily enough I notice that you are a DJ on one of my fav online radio stations WFMU! My girlfriend MinkWest introduced me to WFMU and I am now a regular listener along with her.
Grateful for the circles within circles that draw together the best humans 🥰
@bourgwick A special edition of Good Ol Grateful Deadcast on Dead zines, most particularly The Golden Road would interesting….. but then all of them are. Thanks to all of you who produce this wonerful work of scholarship
@bourgwick Thanks for the collaborative scholarship. Do you ever sleep?
