Most inspired #newmusicfriday drop today? The Blessed Madonna tapping Jamie Principal— the voice of Frankie Knuckles' "Your Love," "Baby Wants to Ride," and several of the earliest Chicago house tracks— for a monster club workout celebrating the city's past + present. https://youtu.be/CKZO1nU9a4o

Burt Bacharach’s melodies really were ingenious, and part of the magic was linking with Dionne who brought out the heart in them. Her ability to imbue those songs with such aching vulnerability and sweetness helped make his gifts undeniable.

Their catalog is immense and not everything works, but at their best— especially when exploring heartbreak and romantic loss— the songs can punch you right in the heart. Here’s my playlist of their most moving work.

Thee French Touch classic in a league with Daft Punk’s ‘Discovery,’ Roulé Records, and early Ed Banger. Kindred with Melbourne-based Avalanches. Precursor to vaporwave. The 2004 pre-bloghouse eternal. Back in print and solid as ever. 💫 https://smugglersway.ffm.to/uppercuts

A big hello to this new Autechre DJ mix revisiting the state of electro, techno + ambient music circa '92! https://autechre.mixlr.com/recordings/1977679
Autechre | Artificial Intelligence - 1992 Contextual Mix

In celebration of Warp's re-release of Artificial Intelligence - a mix of some of the stuff that was floating around us at the time.

Kate Bush, lover of the absurd and theatrical, has been gearing up in costume to perform quirky songs on British television her entire adult life. It honestly tracks she might show up dressed as an otter singing the theme from 'Baywatch' on 'The Masked Singer UK.' That voice is unmistakable. https://youtu.be/P4OX-lDIyvs

Adored this piece by Leor Galil in the Chicago Reader about tracing the provenance of the well-worn house music 12”s he’s picked up over the years at Chicago record shops https://t.co/lNOZc38DE8
Reading house’s history from its used records

Chicagoans don’t need an excuse to talk about house music, but when the biggest pop star in the world drops a record indebted to house, you can expect more than just a conversation. Beyoncé’s Renaissance has effectively evangelized for this Chicago-born sound since the album came out in July, not least because she shaped it […]
