TIMMY: What's that, girl?

LASSIE (echoing from the bottom of a well): *bark bark bark*

TIMMY: You say you're aware of the irony of the situation?

@SirEviscerate wait what, is Lassie girl?
In my language #finnish 3rd person pronouns do not differentiate gender and the name is almost - but not quite - identical to boys name “Lasse”. Maybe that’s why I’ve always thought Lassie is a boy.

@rpsu @SirEviscerate

most of the Lassies *were* Laddies. something about male dogs being easier to train (IIRC).

@howlinhobbit @rpsu @SirEviscerate I’ve always read that girl dogs are easier to train

@Gg58 @rpsu @SirEviscerate

I was wrong. it’s not most.

“All nine Lassies have been male dogs. Although in the movies and on television, Lassie was cast as a female dog. All of the Lassies were descendants of Pal, the first Lassie, who died in 1958.”

further searching reveals that collies “blow coat” (major shedding) when the seasons change. doing that isn’t gender-specific, but it’s more extreme with intact females. that’s the reason.
