My heart is broken for Colorado Springs.

LGBTQ+ people are nearly four times more likely than non-LGBTQ+ people to experience violent victimization.

And Anti-LGBTQ+ emboldens extremists to violence.

This must end. Now.

LGBT people nearly four times more likely than non-LGBT people to be victims of violent crime

@rbreich No surprise there. Thanks for sharing!
@rbreich That's why I vox populied myself over to Mastodon
@rbreich Thank you for using your platform to help bring awareness to this. ❤️🏳️‍🌈
@rbreich constant worry in my family. Thousands of years of human culture and we just can’t seem to move beyond this type of bs. Utterly depressing. When, when, when will it stop?!
@rbreich I couldn't agree more, Sec. Reich
@rbreich Please consider using CWs on posts like these in the future. A lot of folks are already aware and every time they see a post about it they start spiraling again. Thank you 💜
@esdin @rbreich and for us newbies, what is a CW? Code word? Tag?

@TakingOff @rbreich Content warning!

if you're still very new, here's a guide I maintain that covers CWs and lots of other stuff!

@esdin @TakingOff @rbreich thank you for providing this link. I needed help adding a warning.
@esdin @rbreich What are cws?
@rbreich @CJYART Content Warnings; they allow you to wrap text when it’s sensitive or long; good for preserving folks autonomy in engaging with content
@rbreich sad day for America there is No excuse for such action we are all human and deserve to be treated as such

@rbreich Being anti-LGBTQ+ is like saying "I prefer blondes, therefore you shouldn't be allowed to date brunettes."

Being violently anti-LGBTQ+ is like saying "I prefer blondes, therefore I'm going to murder you if you prefer brunettes."

@probablyjohnfunk @rbreich That is the best example!!

@Just_Jen @rbreich Of course, in many cases, it's probably something like "I secretly prefer brunettes, but everyone I know prefers blondes, so I'm going to pretend to hate people who prefer brunettes so nobody thinks I'm one of them."

But then the metaphor starts getting too complicated. The first version does a perfectly adequate job of demonstrating how absurd it is to be anti-gay.

@probablyjohnfunk @rbreich It's the "secretly prefer brunette" 's that we need to look out for because they usually overcompensate with extra hatred. Why hate themselves for being closeted when they can hate others 😕

@rbreich it won't sadly,

They'll be thoughts and prayers and claims its "the wrong time to change things" and then things will move on until the next mass shooting. Repeat again.

America is broken when it comes to gun violence

@cabaal @rbreich when it comes to sensible gun laws, they will be those who will always say, "It's too soon to talk about this now." But of course, with at least one mass shooting every week, according to them, it never will be late enough to start talking about this and passing laws.
@cabaal @rbreich Colorado is a shit hole just like Texas full of Right Wing Cretins and gun nuts.
@rbreich Just heard about it here too. Sickening. The hatred being pumped into our culture has to end.
@rbreich I'm staggered by it 😢😢😢 Grotesque. Crushing ✊🏻🏳️‍🌈✊🏻🏳️‍⚧️✊🏻🏳️‍🌈✊🏻
@rbreich sadly, the country seems to have elected a pack of extremists to the House, so the chance of meaningful federal legislation is very low. And the Supreme Court is compromised, so sensible state and local laws will be overturned. It’s a long, sad road ahead.
@rbreich the headline that The Onion posts every time this happens: "No Way to Prevent This", Says Only Nation Where This Regularly Happens

@rbreich The problem is that fear of the other is very great in this world and has been as far back as we have history. It's exasperated by religion which generally also spews hate at the other especially when it comes to alternate concepts of sexuality.

This will not end soon but will eventually as generations become more tolerant.

@rbreich We’re looking at you, MTG.
@rbreich This COS resident agrees but “American exceptionalism” today means most of the country will shrug and say “it’s sad, but what you gonna do?” The richest country in the history of the world does nothing about so many issues we could solve. That is sadly exceptional.
@rbreich Words are great and all, but they don't stop bullets as good as they cause them to fly.
@rbreich My apologies but if they won't save their kids in schools with passing gun laws, what makes you think laws will be made to protect OUR community? I have seen too many of these attacks over the last 7 decades Enough already BORN THIS WAY!

Conservatism only survives by dividing the working-class. Conservatives preach hate and people die, even conservatives.

Empathy can only be taught in childhood. Americans don't do empathy, which is why the leading cause of death for American children is gun violence.

Ask a Marxist about morality and you get the same moral relativism as capitalists.

This is a cultural problem.

Compassion is ridiculed by the left, right, and center. Please think deeper.

@rbreich Horrible to wake this morning and hear of this. I fear this new GOP House will do even less and even give more protections to those who do this type of thing. Condolences to the families.
@rbreich So heartbreaking!💔 It doesn’t have to be this way!
@rbreich The people who worship at the altar of "liberty" & "freedom" have no concept of its meaning. It seems they want anything but liberty for those they don't agree with, I can't think of a more blatant display of weakness than that...
@rbreich "... a fundamentalist Idaho pastor told his small Boise congregation that gay, lesbian and transgender people should be executed by the government, which lined up with similar sermons from a Texas fundamentalist pastor." (from the CBC). As long as so-called Christian leaders spew this vomit at their followers, things will never change.
@rbreich Heartfelt prayers for the victims of this and future massacres. Easy gun access has failed to protect the innocent. Will political leaders heed this call-to-action, and enact common-sense #gunsafety laws? I pray that our leaders find wisdom and courage.
@rbreich terrible news. Terrible stats.
@rbreich Just a reminder, the ideological forces driving terrorism are most often right wing. The rhetoric of hate is mainstreamed by voices like Tucker Carlson, Hannity, and their fetid underlings spread across the corporate shitpipe.
@rbreich The right thing to do is a road less traveled by those perceptively challenged.

@rbreich Someone influential needs to sue the people demonizing them.

@rbreich Thank you.

This stuff is like terrorism of a group of people and the DOJ is doing nothing!

They are making shit up to distort the truth in order to politically manipulate people in way that inspire copycats.

@rbreich The whole "gun violence" thing could go away in my world... the second amendment is a social experiment that by any metric, has failed
@rbreich it will never end until people realize we are all the same. We all bleed red. I'm so tired of people hating on others because of differences. It hurts my heart.
