While Corbyn and Chomsky were among the speakers at an event that mostly blamed NATO for the war Putin has unleashed in #Ukraine, socialist friends of Ukraine were outside with a message of solidarity:

Was Toussaint L'Ouverture just an imperialist proxy? Was Ho Chi Minh just an imperialist proxy?

The revolutionary socialist US organization Tempest (hadn't heard of them before, tbh) held a panel discussion on #Ukraine last month with Yuliya Yurchenko, Alona Liasheva and Ilya Budraitskis, which offered "a Marxist perspective on the #UkraineRussiaWar and .. why internationalists should support the Ukrainian resistance"

Brazil's MES/PSOL appears to be another #Trotskyite example of left-wing solidarity with #Ukraine. Here's an English-language piece from its Movimento magazine about the its participation in the last #Razem congress in Poland:

This is where the line between this "left solidarity with Ukraine" thread and my parallel "bad left takes on Ukraine" threads gets blurred, to some extent.

Objectively, what's the difference between the JCP position and that of Ireland's PBP (https://mastodon.online/@almodozo/109485125814163134)? After all, both condemn Russia's brutal imperialist invasion, but oppose sending Ukraine arms to defend itself.

The emphasis and interpretational framework are strikingly different though..!

It's instructive to compare which organisations and individuals signed the feminist pro-Ukrainian Right To Resist manifesto (https://twitter.com/almodozo/status/1555194385955971074) with those who signed the Feminist Resistance Against War manifesto it was rebutting.

The 'good guys' (to put it bluntly) included, for example, @NPA_officiel, @Attac, @anothereurope and of course a number of @razem members:

A brave stance of Green Party 2020 Presidential candidate Howie Hawkins for solidarity with #Ukraine, which predictably got ratioed by the terrible people in his party (though the balance is turning). Doubt he'll be a nominee again; respect for taking this position anyway ✊

The Union Place

A "lasting peace for #Ukraine requires the defeat of Russia’s brutal imperialism. We stand with Ukraine’s military resistance [and] demand [Russia's] immediate withdrawal ... from all of Ukraine"

"We demand governments increase military and humanitarian aid to Ukraine so it can win more quickly"

With UK trade union leaders - and John McDonnell.

I hadn't checked McDonnell's position - if it's anything like this, it's a refreshing contrast with Corbyn and Abbott ✊

Labour Movement Stands with Ukraine - solidarity rally

On the anniversary of Russia's invasion, a UK labour movement rally to show solidarity with Ukraine and its labour movement.

Yeah, this is a great piece on #Ukraine by the Labour left's John McDonnell.

"What I have found depressing at times has been the tendency amongst some armchair strategists in the UK to ignore the voices of Ukrainians, especially Ukrainian voices from our own socialist and trade union movement"

"I haven’t heard a convincing argument against supplying the weapons that our Ukrainian comrades need to protect their freedom."

The Ukrainian Question for Socialists

Labour Hub

"Some have argued that this is just a proxy war between two imperialist powers, NATO and Russia, and that socialists should have no part in it...

[V]irtually every war since the Cold War can be seen as a proxy war between imperialist powers, but that hasn’t stopped the left making a judgement about the individual cases and supporting liberation struggles...

[T]he left supported the Vietcong resistance to the American dominance of Vietnam, though the Vietcong were armed by China and Russia."

"The question for the socialists and trade unionists in Ukraine was straightforward ... Do they defend themselves or allow the invasion to succeed?"

"Where non-violent protests against the invaders were attempted, they were met with brutality, arrest, and deportation to filtration camps ... indiscriminate killings, torture and rape.

From the outset I could see no other realistic option but to support their right to defend themselves."

#Ukraine #UkraineSolidarity #UkraineRussiaWar

Frankly, to have the Labour left's second-most famous leader say these things is much more impactful than Paul Mason or the various Trotskyites I've had to rely on for much of this thread (which goes back much further on Twitter: https://twitter.com/almodozo/status/1495444549161922569).

The only thing I miss is that any "peace" that would arise from denying Ukraine military support would not just be "unstable"; it wouldn't be peace at all, since oppressive terror would continue and expand in the occupied territories.

The new "Elected Left for #Ukraine" (ELU) network, open to any left-wing politician in an elected position who "supports armed and unarmed resistance of the Ukrainian people," will lobby for political and material support for Ukraine.

Glad to see all the MPs and the MEP of #Denmark's Unity List/Red-Green Alliance (Ø) on the list. Unlike its more moderate rival in the space to the left of the soc-dems, the Socialist People's Party (SF), it belongs to the GUE/NGL group in the European Parliament rather than the Greens, and since many GUE parties have been iffy at best on #Ukraine their voice is needed all the more.

This @workersliberty piece laying into Socialist Appeal over the question of whether Trotsky would or would not have supported arms shipments to #Ukraine is about more than sectarian alt-history.

It covers a lot of well-considered ground on the hypocrisies and contradictions of many leftist parties more generally about which armed struggles they will or won't support, and how selectively the "proxy war" argument is trotted out; ...

https://www.workersliberty.org/story/2023-04-11/why-socialist-appeal-cant-learn-think

#UkraineRussiaWar #UkraineSolidarity

Why Socialist Appeal can't "learn to think"

In the 1938 article, “Learn to think”, Leon Trotsky argued that if fascist Italy sent weapons to aid – for its own malign reasons – nationalist rebels against France in Algeria, socialists in Italy should not oppose and even help that.

@almodozo this misguided reaction to Putin's violent agression has really turned me off of the social democrat movement in the US. it seems very easy to understand the situation. esp if you know what ukraine went thru to depose Yanukovych in 2014.

happy to see some pushback and solidarity with Ukraine!
