Today is #TransDayofRemembrance when we honor and remember trans lives taken by violence. How horrifying that a deadly attack upon the LGBTQ+ community in Colorado Springs should occur right before this solemn day.
Hate isn’t born in us. It is taught. It must end.
This starts with our political leaders, who must cease their cynical attacks against our community before another attack occurs.
Call out the hate. Remind them of its consequences. Hold them to account.

@TheStormcrow @georgetakei the real problem is churches don't receive public funding. They are classified as 501c3 organizations and as such have minimal tax liabilities and can't receive public funding. Which technically makes religious schools forcing states to fund them illegal under federal law.

@TheStormcrow @georgetakei I think more specifically we need to pull ALL tax exempt status on all religions and their facilities, period.

While this hate is certainly taught by most organized religions, it's not all of them, so I think we need to be careful about using a broad brush approach to describe them. But the concept of providing tax exempt status to organizations that teach this hate needs a new review.

@georgetakei When it happens elsewhere, it's easy to feel relieved that it didn't happen in your community, feel terrible for those affected, and move on. Today I wake up to the news that it's happened in MINE. So many feelings this morning but my main thought is WHY DO SO MANY STILL THINK INACTION IS OK???!! Inaction against both gun violence and rampant hateful rhetoric against groups of fellow human beings. Disgusting and embarrassing and heartbreaking.

My mama was a lesbian. I knew something was different about her, but I didn’t understand it because it was not talked about in the early 1970’s, in the south. If she had been allowed to be herself, my childhood would have been much easier. These people have right to love whoever they want openly without fear. Not only does it hurt gay people, it’s hurts the people who love them. My prayers and love is with the LBGTQ community. 🌈🌈🌈🌈

@georgetakei I’m sad and disgusted, and other things I can’t quite put words to. It seem like Colorado has had more than its share of mass shootings, from Columbine to the Planned Parenthood shootings, and too many others, now Club Q.
A couple years ago my synagogue started hiring guards during services and recently installed heavy doors on the entrances. I thought it was a bit much, but with recent events…
This particularly American plague needs to end, but I’m not terribly hopeful.

Hate and anger make people feel strong and in control. That's something many people don't feel right now and the hate mongers are using that against us.

Telling decent people what needs to be done isn't going to help because we already know. We need a leader, and an organized, well-funded organization to fight these people.

I think it needs to be independent of any political party or politician.

Would you consider doing it, or getting the ball rolling?
