Seafront houses in Stromness, #Orkney, with their individual slipways, reflected on a mirrorlike sea.
A calmer day than today!
@Hadenuff looks beautiful. Got as far as Oban this year... would love to get to the islands sometime...
@Hadenuff wow!! Let's hope the calm returns....mad weather just now
@Hadenuff excellent. Hoping to get there sooner rather than later.
@Hadenuff I'm looking forward to spending part of my 60th birthday over in Maishowe to ๐Ÿคžwatch the sunset on the winter solstice.
@SJHS Good luck, I hope you get a cloudless day. ๐Ÿคž
@Hadenuff Thank you. I'm really looking forward to going back to Orkney.
@Hadenuff
Would make a lovely painting. โค๏ธ
@Hadenuff Sadly the Barbara Hepworth gallery was closed when we visited
@JohnLoader6 Sorry to hear that. It is worth seeing. You'll just need to come back soon. ๐Ÿ˜
@Hadenuff That looks such a lovely location. Thank you for sharing.
@Hadenuff canโ€™t stop making pictures inspired by this photo - hope you donโ€™t mind?
@Hadenuff I visited Orkney on a day trip back in โ€˜19 When I go back, I plan to stay longer๐Ÿ˜I absolutely loved Orkney๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿ’–๐Ÿ’•
@Marplesmarbles A day definitely not enough! I hope you manage to get back for a couple of weeks (at least)!
@Marplesmarbles @Hadenuff Orkney was the best place I ever went for work - keep trying to persuade OH we should go for a weekโ€ฆ. So much to see!
@Marplesmarbles @Hadenuff I did a week
So much to see. Bruised on the ferry up to Westray
@JohnLoader6 @Hadenuff I stayed in Wick(down road from Old Pulteney Distillary. The Harbour chip shop was amazing๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿ˜‹The taxi to & from John O Groats was the pricy bit(no buses available) ferry over to Orkney, then bus tour through Orkney. Kirkwall, Stromness, Ring of Brogar, Scara Brae, Churchill Barriers, Italian Church. Didnโ€™t want to leave๐Ÿ˜
@Marplesmarbles that's how we first came to Orkney, 8 years ago. Did the day trip, fell in love and moved here. Never looked back. ๐Ÿ™‚
@Marplesmarbles @Hadenuff Church brilliant. 50 years after creation the original artist returned to tidy the paintings. After his death Highland Park invited his family to help make a new limited edition whisky. They did. It was called Capella. Limited edition and we drank 3 though not all together. Profits I believe went to chapel maintenance
@Marplesmarbles @Hadenuff Wick airport has a spooky claim to fame. It holds the UK record for planes crashing to and from the airport. The place is used by delivery pilots between US and Europe, often single engines. They have to go up the coast of Canada, possibly Greenland and then Wick refuelling everywhere they can. The weather is atrocious in the North Atlantic so many don't make it
@JohnLoader6 @Hadenuff Wow๐Ÿ˜ณI didnโ€™t even know Wick had an airport! That said. I only recently discovered Cumbernauld had an airport as well! #EveryDayIsASchoolDay
@Marplesmarbles @Hadenuff cruises not bruised though my wife went a bit green
@JohnLoader6 @Marplesmarbles ๐Ÿ˜„ the Westray ferry ran aground last week. A few red faces and probably bruises. They floated it off on the tide.
@Hadenuff @Marplesmarbles Whilst we were on it we saw old Naval Landing Craft coming in with artics on them. I gather they work on the salmon farms
@Marplesmarbles @Hadenuff
I visited about 10+years ago on a flying day visit. I went because my Great Uncle, stationed on Orkney during the war, described it as the last place God made. A day was definitely not enough time. I loved every minute. All I can say is God saved the best till last. One day I will go back for longer.
@Hadenuff Love the photo. I hope to visit Orkney within the next year, perhaps in the Spring.
@macronencer I hope you have a great visit. Allow plenty of time, there's a lot to do and see.
