This is going to be the mega thread to hold my various crafting stuff. If it's not your bag, please feel free to mute the entire thread (or me, of course).

I'm gonna have multiple threads branching off from this parent, it'll get gnarly, so hashtags will abound.

Buggeration. Can any other #WWII, #BattleOfBritain, or #Spitfire nerds out there spot the (not) deliberate mistake with my #modelling paint this afternoon?

Right. Attempt #2 at my #BattleOfBritain #Spitfire Mk1a underwing painting.

Actually really pleased with this outcome, definitely more panel-liney. And I guess the (what is now) white undercoat for the port wing might allow similar effect once I lay down the black on that side.

And then a few other colours to lay down on upper surfaces.

And then comes a LOT of cutting different sized circles from masking tape.

Any #modelling Tooters got any tips for ensuring roundel centring using masking?

There we go! That's looking a lot happier.

Or at least a much more #WWII early war appropriate #Spirltfire.

You'd never believe I double checked which wing was which before even starting to lay down any paint, huh? 😬

Still. It's only #modelling - and really, I think it's more than likely that only I would have ever noticed the mistake in the first place....

And that, ladies and gentlethem, is the underside of this #Spitfire #model painted.

Remarkable the difference using acrylics has in working time. This would've taken about a week in my usual Humbrol enamels, taken about 6 hours today...

And here we have the first hints of my usual "let's go #offBook and see what happens..." starting to appear on this #Spitfire #Airfix #model.

#modelling

And we have a finished paint scheme (bar the spinner & props - and the aerial, which I only noticed in these photos so has been done by hand).

Time for a gloss coat, and then the drudgery will properly begin! 🤣

I should've noted earlier, this was a quick build with my son a while back, so there's sprue stubs and gaps where I would normally have gone for a perfectionists finish. But means I'm much less concerned about the not perfect paint schemes, over sprays, etc.

Chocks away! Airfix’s Spitfire takes to the skies again

After decades out of production, the 1:24 scale model plane that thrilled generations of children is back. And it’s being made in Britain!

@IceNine yes. I was... Unimpressed. 🤣

Only because I'm currently 40% of the way thru trying to make their original moulding play ball 🙄

@phil_tanner only 95 quid.

So $280 here? 🙄

@IceNine I paid 33 quid, so $66 (with free shipping) for my original moulding when they had a firesale of the old version last year 😊
@phil_tanner The free shipping is the big one though eh. For example it's cheaper to send to the Falklands [for camera gear from Malaysia] than here!!! And don't get me started on stuff from the USA.
@IceNine yeah. The offer was too good to pass up at that price.
@phil_tanner to be honest it looks pretty good to me mate - what did I miss?
@phil_tanner Oooh, something's looking a little off-center.
@kiwired that may be more of an artefact of poor photography, TBH 🤣
@phil_tanner isn’t the starboard wing white and the port black?
@phil_tanner Painted the wrong wing white?
@whatthehall indeed. Muppet that I am 🙄
@phil_tanner Nah, easy to do. Just treat it as an extra layer of primer :)
