A new animal showed up in my backyard today. At first I thought it must be a young grey squirrel. But it was very fast and dare I say confident, like it was the size it was meant to be as an adult. It moved like a chipmunk - lightning fast with pauses - except it also sat behind a planter and ate a nut. The crows also seemed a bit confused by it.

At this point, I’m pretty convinced it was actually a Douglas Squirrel, which I didn’t know anything about. Anybody agree? #Squirrel #PNW

I liked this quote:

In his 1894 natural history classic, The Mountains of California, John Muir devotes an entire chapter to the Douglas’s squirrel, writing,

“He is, without exception, the wildest animal I ever saw,—a fiery, sputtering little bolt of life, luxuriating in quick oxygen and the woods’ best juices.”
