Today’s #TopicOfConversation. Please share 1 way you are fighting racism/prejudices in your life. mine is in the reply. Are you reading, having conversation, workshops, etc? Maybe other will do what you are doing. #BlackMastodon #BlackTwitter #BlackFediverse #BlackFedi#BlackAcademics #BlackDiaspora #BIPoc #blacklivesmatter #blackisbeautiful #diversity #DiversityEquityInclusion #dei #mastodon #racism #antiracist #asian #indigenous #indigenousPeople #mena #history #native #PursueBlackJoy
@zhivi I'm following/promoting BIPOC creators on social media & elsewhere. Like, I got a group of friends together to see the new Black Panther movie opening weekend so it would help box office numbers. I'm reading N.K. Jemisin. I listen to the podcast Jemele Hill Is Unbothered. I share a lot of this content at work in our "Advancing Equity" Slack channel. I also participate in our "Conversations on Race" meetings at work. Connecting with BIPOC creators helps me get outside my white bubble.
@jaimerwood I love what you are doing. I think conversations are sooo important. But we have to put action behind it. Do you agree? How did everyone like Black Panther? Thanks for sharing the podcast and book.
@zhivi I totally agree! We have to move past learning & talking about change. I get to do this a lot at work b/c my job is to teach STEM, business, & design faculty to incorporate DEIJB into their courses. I LOVED the new Black Panther. So did my friends. It was interesting that the 3 main settings (besides Wakanda) were the U.S., Haiti, & Mexico, all places in N. America scarred by colonialism and the slave trade.
@jaimerwood I’m in education also. I’m in instructional designer. What is one thing you suggest to faculty?

@zhivi my main 3 intros to DEIJB for faculty are
1. Diversify your content
2. Design flexibility into your course policies (late work, etc)
3. Give students choice around how they demonstrate their learning and how they're assessed (self-assessment is legit in some contexts)

What about you? What are you go-to DEIJB tips for faculty?

@jaimerwood thanks. I do a training on Bias in the classroom. Now to get them to come. We are far behind the 8 ball.
@zhivi this work is so important and hard. I commend you for doing it. When I was a #faculty developer at a university, I would mask my DEIJB content with workshop titles like "Student Success Best Practices" and then the workshop would be about equity and inclusion or universal design for learning. Gotta trick white folks into doing better. Haha
@jaimerwood I love that trick. Lol. Now that the conference is over, I’ll think about being more creative.
