Rivers meander over their course as they continuously erode and deposit sediment. Harold Fisk, a geologist and cartographer working for the US Army Corps of Engineers, mapped the meanders of the mighty Mississippi in 1944 and the results are mesmerizing. They also beautifully illustrate geology’s Law of Superposition: newer and younger sediments are deposited on top of older sediments. We see thousand of years of course changes. You can unravel the layers by eye by noting which layer cuts others
Or you can cheat and use the #map legend which has younger course on top, to older on the bottom! #geology #LawOfSuperposition @geography
@vickyveritas this image feels somewhat metaphorical
@AnneleiseHall It does, Anneleise. We should write a novel :)
@vickyveritas yes a more aspirational creative blueprint for our humanity than the Orwellian act out phase we seem to be in would be amazing Vicky. 😄 I saw that amazing map first a couple of years ago and have thought of it several times in relation to the dynamics of change.
@AnneleiseHall I love that, Anneleise. ❤️
@vickyveritas i've adored these maps for years, they're so beautiful as art alone and then there's so much more to see the more you look!
@agentredsquirrel Oh, I could go on and on, but only 500 spaces! Thank you so much and love your name. You spell it with a Y, too!
@vickyveritas I have always loved maps and can study them for hours
@vickyveritas I just found my new screensaver so beautiful. I love exploring #rivers and #canals looking for oxbow lakes, old routes etc.
@shoedesigner What a fantastic idea! I love that you get oxbow lakes! There wasn’t room to talk about them! Thank you!

@Cartonaut 100% worthy. You’re good at Mastodon already!
@vickyveritas I love this so much! Thanks for sharing it
@gillissusan You are so very welcome! I’m glad you enjoyed it!
@vickyveritas I can't even imagine what work it would be to get such a detailed map of layers of such tangled rivers and courses! Would make a great fabric pattern, LOL
@cobalt It's quite a tangle, beej, but Fisk figured it all out so we don't have to. I'd love to have it on fabric 😍
I am about to waste a day for you sharing this, but you can take those TIFFs I shared and open an account at Spoonflower.com to print them as fabric (or wallpaper). Buy the fabric swatch set, well worth it for deciding when sewing your project. My bucket list skill is to sew Aloha shirts with custom maps I make. There are several map-heads making stuff there. Join us.
For example, this person wanted the Fisk maps as tea towels,

@Cartonaut These are incredible! I picture a nice chiffon scarf. Although I don't wear them, yes I certainly would if it was this design! Seriously thinking of ordering because this is extraordinary!

@vickyveritas Such a stunning illustration, thank you for the lovely post Vicky.

(P.S. maybe edit to add hashtags that we can follow? #EarthScience)

@vickyveritas one of my favorite maps of all time
