Just suspended my birdsite account. I'll miss it at some point, but currently only feel relief to have directed my online life away from an increasingly toxic and unstable environment. Happy this place is here! 🐘
@geekmomprojects oh wow. I have returning to twitter to watch to crap show. Maybe I will follow your steps soon
@geekmomprojects @bobjinpa I did the same last week -locked it down tight, logged out. On the fence about deleting it - will likely leave it sit just so no one ‘takes’ my username over there, although, not sure that even really matters for me.
@N3VEM @bobjinpa had the same thoughts about the username, but if things continue as they are I can't imagine I'd want to pick it back up in 30 days. If it's still standing then, someone else there can be "dark GeekMomProjects" if they want after that.
@bobjinpa @geekmomprojects the blue check fiasco was some of the best context I've seen in years lmao
@geekmomprojects And this place is happy you're here!
@axwax thank you! It's been a nice online refuge so far.
@geekmomprojects and we’re happy you’re here! I also disabled my bird account, but realized shortly after that I couldn’t use tools like debirdify to find accounts I followed that migrated to mastodon. Also, if others were using those tools, they couldn’t find me either. So I re-enabled the account, but never really look at it anymore. There’s way more interaction over here now.
@stephen Thank you! I had similar thoughts of wanting to find others and let them find me, but what I see now on the birdsite just isn't good for my mental state. Don't know how others will find me, but I've done pretty well so far finding people from other Mastodon users' "following" lists
@geekmomprojects If people have shared interests and common friends then those connections will eventually reestablish themselves. In some ways you could have a broader reach here as things aren’t as segregated by spoken languages. It’s quite nice to read French, German, Spanish, etc.. Visual arts like painting, LED’s, etc.. transcend languages too.
@geekmomprojects Cheers to that! Your initial action (setting to private, etc) inspired me to do the same. Think I’ll suspend this weekend, too. Thx again!
@KevinFreitas it was all driven more by gut feeling than logic, so I hope it works for you. I certainly have no regrets at this point.
@geekmomprojects Same. Enjoying the communities building up here so miss the bird site less each day.
@geekmomprojects Glad to see you here and I'm looking forward to staying up to date with all of your latest work. If you have recommendations for other makers to follow on Mastadon I'm all ears.
@nnja thank you, and I'm really happy to be able to reconnect with you here. It's not all makers, but I've tried to follow back anyone I recognized over here (I'm sure I missed a bunch), so it might be worth checking the list of follows on my account's home page to see if any of them look familiar or interesting. I've been doing that a lot to find people from other users' follow lists. The community here is still small enough that it's a workable technique.
@geekmomprojects I really don't think it's going to die, but at the same time, it takes work to keep the birdfeed healthy and happy. Without the algorithm, everything here is more about the social aspect rather than the media aspect, which is what I liked birdapp for anyway. I have high hopes for the better world we're building here.

@geekmomprojects I think I've done the first step which is to disable app notifications and linking something saying I'm done posting there.

Notification wise, all I was seeing was stuff from you know who saying: It's Fine Better than ever in fact.

That is really hastening the rest of the steps. I had forgotten about Private, may go do that right now. Thanks.

@geekmomprojects and it's done. As long as it was Protect Your Tweets you were referring to.

Hopefully it wasn't anything else. That's all I found other than deactivate the account entirely in the Android app.

Thank you again.

@kaybee335 I actually deactivated my account, but I'm not necessarily recommending anyone else do the same. It was the only way for me to feel divorced from the site. I took my tweets private for weeks beforehand.

@geekmomprojects I had seen the 'boost' icon greyed out on some accounts over there. Didn't know what it meant at the time.

Supposedly things stop being search indexed once you take things private but with what is going on, who knows what's actually happening now.

I'm still struggling about the actual account shutdown. I don't really want anyone 'becoming me' over there and getting toxic. Even though that's not me anymore. And there's a low risk of happening. Bit of a dilemma.

@geekmomprojects did you ask for your data from twitter?
@poppis yes, I downloaded it a couple of weeks ago, figuring I'd hedge my bets then. It was a good call.
@geekmomprojects I’ll likely be following your lead tomorrow. Melancholy about it (and a bit fearful about how I’m going to share OSO with the wider community going forward), but I’m relieved that a lot of folks made the leap. We’re going to paint this place blinky :)

@joeycastillo @geekmomprojects

I am EXCITED to see several of my favorite Electronics Makers here in the Fediverse!!

8- )

Hoping that I can find some time to join you all in creating BLINKY things!! * * *

( especially curious about Joey's Open Book e-reader DIY(?) project!! :- )

@SaguaroLynx @joeycastillo thank you! I don't know much, but I feel pretty certain that there will be blinky things in the future of my feed.
@joeycastillo I thought I'd hold out longer but the changes (or threatened changes) felt increasingly toxic. I felt a constant need to evaluate the point of my presence there. Leaving removed that stressor. I hope that your decision works for you too. I do think that "Maker Mastodon" will be an excellent place to hang out, blinky lights, oddly specific objects and all!
@geekmomprojects dragons, don’t forget the dragons and werewolves are starting to show up too. 🥰
@TreasureDev @geekmomprojects wait. Are you saying PaintYourDragon is around here somewhere? Dragons and werewolves make that connection for me 😄
@kaybee335 @geekmomprojects not yet I don’t think so. maybe if we tell him there’s an entire community of werewolves and dragons here he’ll join. yes I was specifically talking about him. 😆 we need his dragon and lycan updates.

@TreasureDev @geekmomprojects I was pretty sure who you meant 😄

They're one of my 'anchor' accounts over there. Pretty much the only reason I fire up that app anymore is to see if there's an announcement there that somehow I've missed here 😄

@TreasureDev @kaybee335 @geekmomprojects Invite him to lycan subscribe? The more the merrier!
@joeycastillo @geekmomprojects the more people that migrate the more I’m realizing mastodon is an acceptable replacement. Friends and interests network are rebuilding themselves naturally like synapses. It’s pretty cool to watch unfold as more people join. I don’t have a commercial enterprise though. Any idea how much reach algorithms will affect you guys yet?
@geekmomprojects I'm happy you're here. I've seen enough friends move to this platform that I think I can survive here. Sure I won't get the same engagement, but it was never really about that. Just being heard and surrounded by amazing and caring people is enough.
@stephlahs thank you! I'm glad you're finding things to like here too. It's a different place, which has plusses and minuses, but I'm already adjusting faster than I thought I would.
@geekmomprojects I did the same thing recently after a couple of weeks of not posting there. I just couldn’t stomach supporting what it had become any longer.
@geekmomprojects Glad to see you in this place where your LEDs can continue to light up our lives.
@geekmomprojects
Nice move! It's good to see more big names in the maker "community" are moving to Mastodon!
I hope you leed the way for others to come. From what I read on the other side they're not so enthusiast about it.
