Saturday morning gratitude. Since showing up with tough questions @[email protected] has been giving a masterclass in the craft of community. Since everyone showed up, quiet people who’ve been here for a long time have been listening, helping, getting on with things, not overreacting. @heidilifeldman has shared so many people’s first posts to welcome them, that’s the work. And all the volunteer mods and admins, I have no idea how they’re still standing.
Speaking of volunteer admins and mods, let’s not make the fediverse hardcore by demand. If you’re horrified by the treatment of workers at bird-on-fire, remember that people who maintain this also have lives, loves, families, health, weekends. Every admin is doing it tough through this period, mod teams have their hands full. If you’re in a position to support your server team financially, look for their Patreon. If you can keep things calm around you while they scale up, do. #TwitterMigration
And even as you’re figuring out how all this feels for you, it’s worth appreciating the hard work that’s already been done on the very things that vex you. Shout out to @CaribenxMarciaX for #fediblock and @Are0h for all the things. Quiet whisper to all the screenreader users for endlessly, patiently explaining alt text. Thanks to everyone working out how we live with others, that stuff is complex. #TwitterMigration
Last little thing. Yesterday I listened to someone I know well about their life with OCD. OCD is specific, distressing and not a joke about being tidy. Labels on news and politics posts really help them, because this content is something they have to manage in ways you might not be able to imagine unless you’re familiar with OCD. And they also want others to have the freedom they need to speak. Sorting this out is how we live with each other. We can. #TwitterMigration
