I just presented Art Spiegelman with the National Book Award Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters, on the same day that PENAmerica put out a letter signed by Art and Margaret Atwood and me, among others, protesting the latest round of book bannings.

Spiegelman, Atwood Among Signers of PEN America Letter Against Missouri Book Bans

Missouri book bans include graphic adaptations of the Bible and the Gettysburg Address, as well as Art Spiegelman's Maus and Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale.

PEN America

@neilhimself wow sure am glad I have auto-hide media on

anyway congrats to Mr. Spiegelman, that's a great accomplishment!

@neilhimself keep fighting the good fight!

Astonishing that anyone can find themselves banning 1984 and think "yeah, I'm for sure doing the right thing".

@neilhimself It's a pain, I know, but when the books come back out, they'll be all the more revered.
@neilhimself I swear I remember a graphic novel book or a graphic novel article he wrote about the nature of art in which he argues that art is a much more widely encompassing concept than most think (and that it encompasses many creative things that people do in their daily life and in their seemingly “non-artistic” jobs. Did I imagine this? I’ve never been able to find it again.

@neilhimself

I wonder if you would consider using alt text on the images that you upload here in future. There is a large blind cohort here in the Fediverse and alt text allows them to more fully participate in the conversation.

You have provided my family and I so much joy and adventure over the years. My granddaughter and I have especially bonded over Coraline and I hope that continues. Thank you, for all you have given us.

@RomanticSkeptic @neilhimself I just posted a couple images, and Mastodon doesn't include an alt-text field in the posting interface.

Do you know of a way to include alt text in the proper way, or do you need people to just put alt text into posts as regular post text?

@hteasley @neilhimself

Are you using an app or the browser? It will be slightly different depending on exactly how you are accessing Mastodon.

@hteasley @neilhimself

In Tusky, you would click on the A (text) and then set caption in the pop-up menu.

@RomanticSkeptic @neilhimself Thanks for that. Using a PC web browser, I am not offered that option. I can edit a post, but not edit an image, using Firefox on Windows. When editing a post, I am only offered the Delete option.

I'll edit my post on my phone....

Seems like a good feature to add to the web experience...

@hteasley @neilhimself
I have it using Chrome, so it sounds like a Firefox issue.
@neilhimself you and Art represent two of my personal literary heroes (for different reasons) - that you presented this to him is exceptionally gratifying on a deep level. ♥️
@neilhimself this book is sitting in my backseat currently. I picked it up secondhand, and enjoyed popping it open a few weeks ago for the first time since college.
@neilhimself Maus was a very important piece of media for me. My grandfather was a WW2 vet and spent time in a prisoner camp. Maus honestly helped me understand why he didn't want to talk about that stuff openly. Powerful and important ❤️

@neilhimself Back in the days of Usenet, we never thought the information revolution would bring about a *greater* likelihood of fascism.

We were idiots.

@hteasley @neilhimself
Cory Doctorow said that there were inklings of it, such as “The future is good…if we let it”. Far too many people focused on the “the future is good” part and not the more important “if we let it” part.
@neilhimself Oh I didn’t know you’d be presenting the award to him. That’s great.

@neilhimself

It's cool to see you over here, Neil!

I'm interested in seeing what mastodon can do for authors and artists. It may be small, but that might mean less noise and more interesting conversations.

@neilhimself
I am glad for this letter. It is beyond me, how anybody can think of doing the right thing by banning books. I keep wondering about what is going to happen to all this kids growing up in this environment. That makes me really sad.
@neilhimself I thoroughly enjoyed Maus some number of years ago. Well earned Mr Spiegelman!
@neilhimself I am so glad Y’all are doing this. Books should not be banned!
@neilhimself The lurch to the right, weirdly authoritarian with emphasis on personal responsibility and freedom?
@neilhimself Thank you for reminding us and hopefully spreading the word about those great works! I still remember the first time I read MAUS… I need to get a copy for my library.
@neilhimself Bannir Maus? Mais quelle indignité!
@neilhimself quite how you ban Maus and think you are one of the good guys is a bit of a mystery.
@neilhimself Maus changed my perspective on what comics could be and do.
@neilhimself Fabulous news that AS's been given that award. Hugely deserved and perfect timing.
@neilhimself Do you need a professional Data Analyzer?

@neilhimself a very well deserved prize for an extraordinary graphic novel.

I wonder how our future illustrators and writers will describe our contemporary geopolitics?

@neilhimself nicely done sir. My wife and daughter recently read Maus for their reading club. I’ve had a copy for decades.
@neilhimself my copy of Maus sits on my dresser with other cherished books. Sorry none of yours are there… I have a special case for your books 😉
@neilhimself Maus é uma das obras mais fantásticas que já li! O Prêmio é muito mais que perecido! Parabéns ao ART.
@neilhimself this is one of my all time favourite books ❤❤❤
@neilhimself There is some irony in the fact he is getting an award for works that talk about what book bannings let to in the past.
@neilhimself How fearful America has become…
@neilhimself thank you! I used to work in a bookstore. The table of banned books was one of the most popular displays. People will always resist mind-control tactics - at least, I hope so!
@neilhimself
And banned, not because of the anti-fascist message, but breasts.
@neilhimself I went to Harpur College while Art was a student there. Many of my college friends had parents who survived the Holocaust and even though they were 2nd generation, they still carried the trauma of their parents.

@neilhimself wouldn’t it be grand if we could focus on ridding the world of ignorance rather than working against our best interests by striving to live in darkness…!

#BanIgnoranceNotBooks

@neilhimself Great, but meanwhile #MomsForLIberty took over how many more school boards in the recent #election? My daughter’s BiL ran for, and won, specifically to head them off in a Duluth exurb.
@neilhimself Where has this book been banned?
@neilhimself You're doing the gods' work.
@neilhimself This is a real question. Do you legitimately think that not providing something is the same as banning it? Is it a ban on cigarettes to not sell them in schools? I agree that the law is ridiculous but so is trying to conflate this situation lazy ignorance on the legislators ignorance with fascist suppressions.
@neilhimself I got to interview him a few years ago and was asked not to bring up Maus unless he did. So I did some research and then proceeded to talk about Garbage Pail Kids with him for a while! He did bring up Maus, so we got to discuss the juxtaposition of those two projects, both from him. Super cool guy and amazing writer.
