I'm really considering moving to a smaller instance. The slowdowns on mastodon.social are absolutely understandable but they're frustrating and will probably continue for a while.

@Aleen Well and I'm not sure many new folks realize that MANY smaller instances silence mastodon.social and mastodon.online because of poor moderation, and some instances (like the one my main is on, weirder.earth) are getting announcements from Admin teams that they're about to block mastodon.social. Too many bad actors.

And the awesomeness of federation is a lot of people on a lot on small islands. When an island gets so hugely full (I've seen pie graphs that suggest mastodon.social has over a third of all Mastodon users), then moderation loses its effectiveness, which means that all the smaller islands start blocking the bigger one to keep out the inevitable abuse.

And then you're trapped on the huge island with the bad actors, wondering why you can't hear all the nice folks on the smaller islands.

@hollie Yup! And I get it--moderation doesn't scale well and people deserve to protect themselves from the virtually unmoderated masses.

I've had this account for a long time; moved to another instance for a while but it was shut down, so I picked this one up again because it was easy and I wasn't sure if I'd stick around. But it's definitely time to evaluate my options.
