FYI: We have a few blockers on to opening up DEFCON.social:

1. A different mail server so the main defcon.org doesn't get potentially marked as a spam source

2. A media server that can speak S3 Block Storage to Mastodon. This is critical for scaling.

3. More Moderators. We are building out our moderator plan and will be seeking support soon.

Once we have all three done we will open, until then we will control growth with invite links.

#mastoadmin

For 1 (mail server) we should have that outsourced and tested by the end of this weekend. For 2 (Media server) we have the hardware and are starting to configure it once mail server is complete, so hopefully early next week. And the third (Moderators) I hope the plan will be done and more core moderators added by the middle of next week.
@thedarktangent I'm down to be a mod
@noid @thedarktangent will the stickers still work? 😏
Thank you everyone who has expressed interest in helping moderate. I’ll start reaching out once we have something written about what you can expect and then people can decide their level of involvement. Very awesome seeing the amount of community wanting to help! ❤️
@thedarktangent I can moderate if there is still a need.
@thedarktangent let me know anything that I can help with! And this time I won't tell you to get out of your own hallway 🤣

DEFCON.social update: We are now down to two blockers: An S3 Block Storage Server & more moderators before being able to open more generally.

Both are being worked on, and later this this week we will switch media storage over to the new server.

@thedarktangent why not use was s3 for the second one?
@VoC We plan to retain user media longer and have big storage for that. Once we get into the multi TB of storage and bandwidth it makes sense to self host I think. If we were earning money and hyper-scaling it makes more sense.
@thedarktangent I think you can use minio (https://min.io) for that, depending on how you're hosting.

@manchmod You we’re peeking! Yes that’s what we are working to test first, it seems the consensus choice. Have you used it?
@thedarktangent yeah i use it in my personal infra. I haven't scaled it in a prod env though.
@thedarktangent is there somewhere we can donate $ to for servers?
@pinguino Not yet, I don’t want to ask for support until we show we can keep things running 😂 Thank you for asking!

@thedarktangent This is a big deal, thank you for taking the time and resources to create a new home for us.

Is there any way that we can help?

@thedarktangent I don't know the level of workload that would be involved, but i'll step up if you're looking for moderators. I'd like to give back to the community and help there.

@deviantollam @thedarktangent I’ve met DO a few times at the cons. Wouldn’t trust him with my lock (!) but totally would as a caring, consistent and thoughtful mod!
@thedarktangent Jeff, this looks to be important information about registering a DMCA agent for anyone running a Mastodon instance based out of the US, so they aren't held personally liable for any users copyright violations. https://twitter.com/rahaeli/status/1593819064161665024

@dragosr We (DEF CON) are registered with DMCA on our main site, but a good idea to add the link to DEFCON.social as well. Thank you 🙏 https://defcon.org/html/links/dc-dmca.html
