Can someone explain the extreme sudden surge of new users in the last few hours? What happened? I know that billionaire is hard at work ruining the bird site which is why we already had an increasing number of new user for quite a while but why this sudden surge?

@bitbonk Bird employees had a deadline today to resign with 3 months severance or "swear" they would work themselves to death to save the company. A huge number decided to resign, including whole critical depts.

@bitbonk @mastodonusercount I think the reality has hit that with such a show of solidarity with many employees taking the severance at Twitter today; people are concerned they’re going to lose their ability to find the people they follow as services fail.

As well my Twitter feed has basically become a dusty desert apart from Twitter implosion news so there’s less meaningful info to consume.

It’s a biased guess as that’s essentially why I decided to join! 😁
