@jeff Agreed, and I don't understand why orgs like NPR and APM aren't standing up their own servers to not only post content but also to give their journalists an official/verified presence.

Just like they give them an org email, give them an org Mastodon! And just like they can use their personal email for whatever, they can use accounts on other Mastodon servers for whatever.

@mike @jeff The biggest issue is not technical. A service provider market for Mastodon instancing could address this with packages of all sizes. The bigger issue is content moderation. Each instance would have to administer content moderation. This means that they would need to employ people to do the content moderation function. This is very different from the tech admin function and takes a different skill set.

masto.host is not taking new subscribers right now, but they have different-sized instances out of the box.

I'm planning on setting up an instance when they do, as I want to take a peek at it from the admin side...

@laughingriver @mike @jeff masto.host is great, but as you say it is overwhelmed right now and it is a pretty modest operation. Hopefully a market for Mastodon Service Providers (MSPs ???) will emerge offering tiers and for thousands of users with performance guarantees, just like ISPs. In fact, ISPs might jump into the void. An organization could then buy the service and hire for the content moderation.

@mastodonmigration @jeff That's insightful stuff and I totally agree, but don't many businesses with internet presences already have people with that function and/or skill set, curating or sanitizing or otherwise moderating the material that goes out on their websites or social media handles?
