A good model is email. Organizations have their own email addresses for several reasons, not the least of which is that they want to own the data.

And not just news orgs. Governments, companies, academic institutions, NGOs...

The biggest issue is not technical. They would have to do content moderation. They would need to employ people to do content moderation.

@mike @jeff The biggest issue is not technical. A service provider market for Mastodon instancing could address this with packages of all sizes. The bigger issue is content moderation. Each instance would have to administer content moderation. This means that they would need to employ people to do the content moderation function. This is very different from the tech admin function and takes a different skill set.
