@rob I make myself watch 4 episodes. Then I can make a choice not to continue
@jwslug Get where you’re coming from. Some shows are really slow burners. First season of the walking dead took as least six episodes before it started to kick in (for me). I did nearly give up with that show.
@rob I finish watching, but then I tend to write reviews – and good material on how to completely deconstruct a bad story or bad presentation and explain why it's bad, why it doesn't work, is more educational than looking at things that are good.
@LexTenebris Love the depth you go to with that, and very committed of you. I do tend to keep watching rather than abandon. And that even extends to watching additional seasons of the same terrible shows!

@rob I'm not sure it shows any level of commitment and more demonstrates that I'm an intellectual masochist, or perhaps a sadist – I do enjoy a good vivisection. More than I should.

At a certain point you cut your losses and run, of course. Bad writers tend to be bad in the same way over time so there's diminishing returns. The curse of art.

@rob I'll give it a little time to get better though! And sometimes a friend will warn me that a series 'takes a few episodes' to get good!
@cmoz Made me think of a follow up… Do you wait for a whole season to “air” before you start watching?
@rob @cmoz if I’m going to watch something I much prefer it to be all there so I can binge if it’s any good. I tend to struggle with tv dramas, bbc itv and c4 all release them at the same time and one episode a week. Hard to remember which one was which sometimes especially with crime dramas
@bengillam @cmoz I’ve been caught out with season breaks a couple of times. Most recent was New Amsterdam. Really annoyed us we were gonna have to wait a while to be able to continue.
@bengillam @rob Ya I can only really cope with 1 or 2 otherwise I've no idea what the hell the characters are doing.
@bengillam @rob it's funny that you both have been the earliest people I engaged with on another social media site, and now it's the same here 🤗 good to see familiar faces - also enjoying the new conversations so much! Far less engagement over the last few years over there.
@cmoz @bengillam Thats because we are your favourites. 🤪
@rob @bengillam haha 😄 maybe .... 😅
@rob I don't usually abandon it as a conscious decision, but other shows just always sound more fun until it's been months since I've watched it and now I don't remember what's happening.
@rob My ADHD tends to decide for me. If a show (or book) isn't compelling me to watch, I'll just forget to come back to it. Happens even with good shows sometimes.
@rob depends on who asked me to watch. But most likely I’d abandon.

@rob

My wife and I have a standing rule: if we start watching a show, and either of us decide it's not working, we can immediately veto it. We watch a lot of Britbox shows, and have had to bail on some of them.

Same with some of the shows on Amazon, which seems to have lots of awful content.

When it comes to books, I follow the same rule. There's an old saying:

"There is no greater thief than a bad book.”
