Do you believe tech/programming Twitter will eventually move here?

I'm not talking about engagement-seeking non-sense or meme content

I'm talking about serious information exchange about software development, including created resources such as blog posts or videos.

Many people create accounts, but I have yet to find an engaged discussion or people sharing their programming content.

Is it me? Can you help? #dotnet #development

@bernasconi Iโ€™m not sure what all counts as โ€œseriousโ€ but I would expect technical conferences (and all the surrounding conversations they generate) may slowly migrate off twitter to somewhere else. Do you think that would account for some (not all) of such content?
@ivan3bx That would definitely be the content I'm looking for to consume more of. ๐Ÿ‘
@bernasconi Same. It's early days but working backwards, something many conference organizers get asked is what #hashtag people should follow... It would not surprise if if people start assuming Mastodon (or some other site) in favor of Twitter.
@bernasconi I already see a lot more valuable .NET content here than I ever did over Twitter.
@ocdtrekkie @bernasconi same here, and not just #dotnet. Been nice to not have to scroll through endless โ€œinfluencerโ€ posts

@ocdtrekkie Great to hear. I'm tying my best to be an asset to this platform. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Do you have any accounts that you would recommend to me that I can follow for more valuable .NET content?

@bernasconi If your server is running Mastodon 4.x, you can follow the #dotnet hashtag itself, and you'll see a wide cross-section of it in your feed.

@ocdtrekkie Oh, thanks. I just found out how to follow a hashtag! Thank you. ๐Ÿ™

Luckily "my" server is on 4.0.2. ๐Ÿ‘

I still need to figure out what server is best for me. I just give it a try and see how it all works, to be honest. ๐Ÿ˜Š

@bernasconi Awesome, glad you figured it out. Servers generally aren't too important unless you really want a specific local timeline, or have particular expectations of the moderator team. Don't sweat it too much.
@ocdtrekkie Thanks, very welcoming and kind of you. ๐Ÿ™

@[email protected] We are doing something really similar in our current project but using a DIY DAL with POCOs instead of EFCore. We had to be really careful that the references to SQL libraries didn't get pulled client side. This is the setup we came up with, in case it is helpful. https://1drv.ms/b/s!AiiBj5Iexp6YqYRY9Xe4NdCwzr7rfw?e=ESVz8x

Mastodon
@bernasconi are you following @dotnet? It helps.
@macentee @dotnet thanks, I just followed. Groups are new to me. I'm new here, I need to find out how everything works. ๐Ÿ˜Š
@bernasconi from the people I follow here, its basically only serious stuff, which is nice. I can keep my twitter account up for all the memes and read interesting things here ;P

@jite Great to hear. It sounds like I'm in the right place then.

I'm always open to funny things but I'm mainly online to learn new stuff and share what I work on with the community.

@bernasconi My biggest influx of posts comes from following tech hashtags.
@bernasconi Interesting question It's early days but several of the #'powershell folks have moved over. I'm doing what I can to promote. As for the wider #.NET community - that may happen. To some degree, it all depends on how badly Elno messes up.
@DoctorDNS Great to hear. I need to figure out how it all works here to find the content I desire. It seems like there is more than I can find right now. ๐Ÿ˜†

@bernasconi I am starting to see a few people here who are engaging, but I'm not seeing a lot of programming content yet, except for @khalidabuhakmeh.

But I'm in a weird place because I started a job in September where I am working on Node, TypeScript, React, etc. after 20 years of .NET and C#.

So I'm still seeing a lot of .NET people but I'm looking for Node / TypeScript content, too.

@twwilliams @khalidabuhakmeh Great to hear.

I'm currently working on a project with a React/TypeScript frontend and a .NET backend.

I wish you a lot of joy with your new endeavors. It's always interesting to learn something new.

By heart, I remain a .NET developer, though.

@bernasconi @twwilliams the Twitter implosion hit at the worst time between vacation and conference duty. I'll be redoing more in the upcoming weeks.
@bernasconi it's slowly happening, the #fsharp guys seem more active than the #dotnet tag, and the #csharp folks seem to mostly always tag #dotnet as well, but a lot of it is just "Hi! I'm here... " which is a great start. But the technical posts are slowly starting to happen
@keith great to hear. It seems like. I am in the right corner of the Internet. ๐Ÿค“๐Ÿ‘
@keith @bernasconi The longer the uncertainty goes on, the more folks are posting here, and the less they are posting there. This time it feels like it might happen

@bernasconi seems to be more engaged here.

I've been posting and chatting.

@brendoneus Great to hear! I've had great conversations so far. Looking forward to the future.

@bernasconi surely it will, Mastodon is much better at it due to the lack of "smart" algos pushing crappy content. #dotnet tag on here is already miles ahead of what it was on twitter.

The real challenge will come when it reaches critical mass to attract spammers.

@yegor @bernasconi How would one follow the #dotnet hashtag?

@ElahnDaneeCodes @yegor @bernasconi

In the latest version of Mastodon, you can follow hashtags. Unfortunately, our server (hachyderm.io) has not migrated yet. They are planning to do so by the end of the year.

@Moke Ahh got it lol... So what's your #dotnet #csharp strategy?
@ElahnDaneeCodes I've added a lot of folks that I was already following on Twitter. I have also created a list called Dotnet and added some folks that toot about dotnet there.
@Moke I imported the csv from fedifinder... Hopefully it works soon
@ElahnDaneeCodes I think it takes some time. TBH I added them manually, I haven't tried using the csv, would've been much easier lol
@Moke Fingers crossed...Would love for it to be fully up and running today LOL

@ElahnDaneeCodes @yegor @bernasconi

Unfortunately you can only follow a hashtag on a instance. If you open your instance hachyderm.io on the web and search for the hashtag you can start follow the hashtag.

This is only possible if your instance is already on version 4 of mastodon.

All posts with this hashtag will be in your timeline from then on.

@magbeat @yegor @bernasconi Thank you so much for explaining... this is sooo new
@ElahnDaneeCodes @yegor @bernasconi also you can pin the column in advanced web interface when you search for a hashtag. Itโ€™s a reasonable workaround until your instances upgrades to v4

@bernasconi it's the third time I am giving Mastodon a chance and it feels different this time. I am following a lot of people now and also some hashtags and my timeline is starting to fill with programming content.

So it may be the time the community comes over, but you never know ๐Ÿ˜‰

@magbeat Hopefully, I'd love to be part of that community. For me, it never clicked with Twitter.

@bernasconi

Couple personal examples in the past week (my first week):

- https://fosstodon.org/@TimPurdum/109355929873613184

- https://fosstodon.org/@cymplecy/109343056330810935

- https://fosstodon.org/@jasonm/109354286317331156

All of these originated from engagement on the local timeline, iirc.

@jasonm That's all I could find again tonight. Biggest issues are that the pre-core #SignalR docs feature prominently still in search results, and the core docs don't include this in any of the samples/introductions as far as I can tell. It's there if you dig, but not obvious.

@jasonm Great examples! I'm looking forward to great discussions here.
