Twelve GOP senators voted today in favor of marriage equality, overcoming the 60-vote filibuster threshold:

Roy Blunt (MO)
Richard Burr (NC)
Shelley Moore Capito (WV)
Susan Collins (ME)
Cynthia Lummis (WY)
Rob Portman (OH)
Dan Sullivan (AK)
Mitt Romney (UT)
Thom Tillis (NC)
Lisa Murkowski (AK)
Join Ernst (IA)
Todd Young (IN)

I wrote about why I don't like this bill, and why it absolutely needed to pass.

I'm glad it did. Read my piece on it here:

I Hate the Senate Bill and We Need It to Pass

Listen now (13 min) | It sucks. And it's our only real option. We have to pass it.

Charlotte's Web Thoughts
@charlotteclymer McConnell did not vote for it. Interesting.
@charlotteclymer This bill is garbage, and didn't need to pass.
@alyssagambone It absolutely needed to pass, and it's completely absurd to wish and hope that 2024 will go well enough that we reach 60 votes. No, that's childish and deeply irresponsible.
@charlotteclymer This bill is a joke. It's worse than Obergefell, gives political cover to SCOTUS to repeal, and will be repealed in 2024. Passing this bill is a slap in the face to the LGBTQ community. We got nothing positive from it, and gave the red states the green light to stop issuing marriage licenses to gay couples and to misgender trans people when deciding marriages. This bill is fascist.
@alyssagambone I realize that being performative online is really satisfying for you, but it is not accurate. At all. Sorry. It sounds like you need to read up on legislature procedure and electoral strategy. In the meantime, I'm gonna block you. Bye now.
@alyssagambone @charlotteclymer Thank you Charlotte. Let’s please not bring twitter’s bad habits over here. If you are going to disagree give us the actual reasons somehow, not just the anger and vituperativeness.
@charlotteclymer Burr and Joni Ernst were surprises to me. Mitt only partly, now that the Mormon church has changed its stance on marriage equality.

@NoelSiksai @charlotteclymer

So wait was this the final bill and it passed or was this some procedural hurdle?

Is this headed to Biden now?

@Murphysical @charlotteclymer the bill is amended from the original House version. It has to go back to the House for concurrence and then to the President.
@charlotteclymer This is well written, and it highlights an important part of politics that I myself used to not understand. Sometimes we can only get *some* of what we want. Rather than folding our arms and walking away with *nothing*, the plan then becomes going back later to get more. Doing it all again. Continuously applying pressure.
@charlotteclymer interesting to see who from the GOP signed off. I knew damn well neither of the two cancerous shits that masquerade as senators from my state would.
@charlotteclymer Surprised to see Romney here. Also, McConnell didn't vote for it even though he's in an interracial marriage. Very odd.
@JoeFromCali @charlotteclymer The LDS actually supported this bill, so it's not a surprise that Romney voted yes. They've apparently made some changes in their public stances since the backlash after they funded Prop 8.
@shaktinah @charlotteclymer Interesting – I did not know that. That's promising. Thanks. Wow...this feels so different than Twitter. LOL
@charlotteclymer Interesting that McConnel voted against his own marriage to own the lives. The #GOP is a cult and a disease.

@charlotteclymer

Oh look. Susan Collins is using her spine.

@RuthlessBunny @charlotteclymer
My thought was part that and part “this must be some kind of trap… where’s the football, Lucy…”
@charlotteclymer thank you for writing this excellent analysis and explanation. Seeing who was supporting this bill from the right it was clear there had to be a massive “but” in this bill and you describe it so clearly in your piece.
@charlotteclymer so does this then become law (there is a House bill that aligns?) Happy for my USA friends.
@charlotteclymer This is so infuriating…. These GOP are NOT progressive. Why don’t you, at least, mention that all the Dems voted for the bill? Pushed for it…. fought for it.
@meh1 @charlotteclymer Possibly because that was so obvious it didn't need to be said, though did Manchin?
@meh1 @charlotteclymer I think the point is that we desperately need moderate R’s in order to pass basic protections
@meh1 That the Dems voted for it is a given. Can’t get to 60 without those 50. Don’t get infuriated, there’s no reason. 😉
@charlotteclymer Do you think Romney pushed for the anti-polygamy measure, at least in part, as a gesture of Mormon politics?
@charlotteclymer thank you for sharing. As a new user myself here, I’ve been told to use #pol and #uspolitics when posting so people can choice to not see or to see.
@charlotteclymer Do you know what it will mean for ss couples who got married in red states if the Supreme Court were to bounce marriage back to the states? As in, would these existing marriages be annulled?

@charlotteclymer

Just followed you over from Twitter. Trying to figure this platform out.

@charlotteclymer So, it's kinda like the "oh, but you can still travel out of state to get an abortion if they ban it in your state" type consolation prize?
@charlotteclymer Charlotte!!! You’re here!! Yay!
@charlotteclymer wait, marriage wasn’t equal? Egads #genderwar
@charlotteclymer that’s right can’t let perfect be enemy of the good, and this is a good step 🌈❤️
@charlotteclymer very informative review of the bill and what it actually does. I agree it's not what we want, but it's what we need for the time being.
@charlotteclymer Thanks for native tooting here on Mastodon rather than phoning it in from the bird site like so many others.
@charlotteclymer Its bullshit what going on with abortion rights. What's going on there? Nothing. They'll wait till 2024 to capture the women's vote.
