Last week I had the pleasure of interviewing the creator of Mastodon, Eugen Rochko (@Gargron). We talked about how crazy the past few weeks have been, why the site was built to resist the kind of takeover that Twitter has seen, and what he makes of Elon's tweet poking fun at Mastodon: https://www.wired.com/story/the-man-behind-mastodon-eugen-rochko-built-it-for-this-moment/

The Man Behind Mastodon, Eugen Rochko, Built It for This Moment

People fleeing Twitter have turned to Eugen Rochko’s alternative. He says social networks can support healthy debate—without any one person in control.

@willknight Thanks for the great read! In the introduction, shall "the Mastodon protocol" be more appropriate being written as "the ActivityPub protocol"? It's the protocol Mastodon and many other social network implementations follow:

ActivityPub

The ActivityPub protocol is a decentralized social networking protocol based upon the [ActivityStreams] 2.0 data format. It provides a client to server API for creating, updating and deleting content, as well as a federated server to server API for delivering notifications and content.

@willknight @Gargron Great piece. Happy you guys found a moment to chat during the #TwitterMigration.
@willknight @Gargron I'm not a big fan of his statement that he's open to introducing "quote toots". Those set really perverse incentives on Twitter
@willknight @Gargron Nice article and in my opinion, @Gargron, I hope you'll continue as you see fit and not feel pressured from us Twitter people.
@willknight @Gargron Great interview 👍 This is why #Mastodon could truly become the world’s water cooler! “Rochko began developing Mastodon shortly after leaving university in 2016. He was a fan of #Twitter but wanted to create a platform not controlled by any single company or person, reasoning that online communication is too important to be at the whim of commercial interests or CEOs.”
@willknight @Gargron Thank you for not doing a RT crosspost.
@willknight @Gargron loved this insight. Shame we can’t use Patreon to also gift a few hours sleep to our various mods & admins.
@willknight @Gargron very helpful article for newcomers to tooting. Thank you Will. I instinctively went to share your WiRED article with the floatin side menu but then realised the mag does not have a button for tooting, yet
