#Freedom of Speech, Four parts post.

Can we have TOTAL #freedom of speech and still have a safe #society ? In #Italy for instance, Freedom of Speech is protected by art. 21 of the Constitution (“Everyone has the right to freely express their #thoughts in speech, writing and any other means of diffusion…. unless contrary to morality”) and with it the #right to freely express and disseminate one's thoughts to an indeterminate generality of subjects... 1/4

...in addition to the right not to be hindered in the formulation of one's opinions and in the methods of expression as inherent to the personality of man.
However, the freedom of speech in the manifestation of thought is not absolute, but is subject to limitations that guarantee the correct balance in order not to incur in the so-called "crimes of opinion", which can be configured in cases of offense to the honor of persons (injury/ defamation), religious sentiment... 2/4

...the prestige of institutions (outrage), as well as in cases marked by conduct dangerous to public safety (incitement to crime, apology, etc.).
So there is a line between freedom and abuse, which should never be crossed: if I am free to say what I want about anyone, then others are free too, and no one would be free anymore because there would be the constant risk of being attacked for any reason, suffering public defamation, having one's personal data made public... 3/4

...or becoming someone's impersonation. Hate crimes and incitement to violence would grow exponentially and this would cause many casualties. Yes, words can kill, and in my opinion, limiting the damage with safety rules doesn't take away anyone's freedom. Thoughts? 4/4

@beatrice agree. I’m reading An ugly truth. Book about #facebook and their data/security problems. One point they try to make is freedom of speech… but we know what happens on social media when there is no regulation at all.

I fear that the "Freedom of Speech" push in social media is yet another way to make people polarize and hate each other so that these companies gain even more money from the outrage posts.

@beatrice the book is amazing. I’m halfway through it. If you like reading and these questions about social media and freedom, It’s worth looking at.
Social media is amazing but sometimes it separates people and all we can see is hate. Money is obviously something big, mostly because of #ads
