Normally I rush to Twitter to find out if there was just an earthquake, but let's try Mastodon as well... #bayarea #earthquake
@mmasnick Didn’t feel anything in the South Bay.
@joy USGS is reporting a very small quake near half moon bay. I'm not far from HMB, but... far enough that I shouldn't feel a quake that small.
@mmasnick I'm in Half Moon Bay, and I didn't feel it.

@suzielowreydiver it's weird. i wouldn't normally feel something that small. this was... noticeable.

@mmasnick

Maybe it has something to do with shallow/deep? Dunno. I've only felt one here in N Texas and it was a single thud from something small.

@mmasnick
The Western Quakebot thing says it was only 0.69km deep. That's pretty shallow.
@mmasnick Nothing in Sonoma county...
@mmasnick yep, felt a large but quick thump
@owlasteroid finally! someone else who felt it. But, yes, large, very quick. I described it as a thunk!

@mmasnick didn't feel anything in the South Bay. Looks like USGS has pinned it at a 2.9, just south of Half Moon Bay.

@michaelrhanson yeah. that must have been it, but it was a lot more noticeable than i would think a 2.9 would be.
@mmasnick M2.9 near half moon bay
@DataDrivenMD @mmasnick felt noting here in Oakland.
@cfarivar @DataDrivenMD seems like it was quite small. but sharp and noticeable if you were nearby
2.9 magnitude earthquake near Half Moon Bay, California, United States and San Francisco, California, United States : November 16, 2022 05:22

3km S of Half Moon Bay, CA - 2.9 EARTHQUAKE - Daly City, Sunnyvale, San Francisco, Hayward, Fremont, Santa Clara, Oakland, San Jose, Berkeley, Richmond, Concord, Vallejo, Antioch, Fairfield, Salinas, and Santa Rosa - 2022-11-16 05:22:16 UTC

@mmasnick nothing here in the peninsula but glad you tested the earthquake response as I usually go to Twitter for that too
@honeymango it was effective! got more responses and faster here than on twitter (I tried both!)
@mmasnick excellent, one less reason to go to Twitter - not much left now!
@mmasnick I didn’t feel it in the east bay
@mmasnick HMB too small and far away to feel a thing over here in Oaktown.

@mmasnick Unfortunately my go to bot doesn't have a mastodon presense yet =(

@mmasnick I didn't feel anything (I'm in Oakland). I saw there was a tiny one in HMB, but can't imagine feeling it all the way from there.
@nsqe yeah. seems like it must have been that small one, that was very localized. all the people who felt it are within a pretty small radius of here. I'm surprised, as I don't think I normally feel 2.9s even when they're nearby. This one, though, was noticeable.
@mmasnick I’m in SF and nada

@mmasnick the largest magnitude one I felt was a 4.5 in Hawaii and the building visibly shook/quavered

We all evacuated as they checked for structural damage, made sure there wasn’t an issue with tsunamis, and also checked to see if it was plate or volcanic based

This time I’m visiting SF for the OWASP conference, but I used to live here and felt some minor thunk ones in my time - never lived here during the big 1989 or ofc the 1906

@mmasnick this is the only thing I am going to miss about Twitter. All the earthquake and volcanic sites are there. I need them to be here so I get the notification.
