I jointed mstdn.social thinking it was mastadon.social and I really don't understand the difference. Why do these two things exist?
What is the difference between mstdn and matodon? Or was it just a way to fool the newbies like me?
@zackdavisson They're two different instances. Being on one doesn't stop your from doing anything, including following people from any other server.
@thegurkha Mastodon says different.
@zackdavisson posts from people I follow on other servers show up in my home feed.
@zackdavisson That might mean you can't see the list of people you followers on a previous instance, if you've moved you're account. I'm definitely seeing the activity of people I follow on other servers.
@zackdavisson Have you started seeing posts from follows on other servers yet? You don't see their historical stuff, just their new posts.
@zackdavisson It's like a website address. When any part of the stuff before the dot, and stuff after the dot, changes, you end up on a different website. In this case, the different websites are all different instances (servers), managed by different people with their own userbases, but all connected - for example, you're talking with me right now, and I'm on an entirely different instance (mastodon.art)
@zackdavisson The nice thing about mstdn.social is that it has active and good moderation, whereas mastodon.social doesn't, because it's so much bigger (and for other irrelevant reasons that I'm not going to bother you with right now XD). The people who run mstdn.social are lovely, and very on-the-ball with moderation, so there's far less chance of you seeing anything nasty in your feed.
@Curator I think I would prefer the other one then. I'm not particularly interested in moderation.

@zackdavisson these are just servers where your account is created at. Both of these are good.

You can connect with anyone irrespective of the servers/instances. There are also servers for specific interests, location and so on.

For now browse around to get a hang of it. Then delete the account to create a new one when you figure things out. You'll know which server you want to be on.

Give it a try. It's worth it. Has the vibe of early twitter / pre-meta Instagram
