So what we need, perhaps, is some sort of #structure for titling #toots - whether it’s formatting or simple labels. Out there in the rest of the social media world messages have title lines. It means you can signal what a toot is about so you can flag things. On the one hand, you can sort toots. Or you can use toots as #announcements - an example of which would be publication dates. I’m still a little fuzzy on this, but now a lot of tooting is just discussion.
@shapiro Don’t people just use CW for this?

@pjmelton

For which? This is where lack of titles leaves me confused. Isn’t CW a warning of sorts? It isn’t a pointer to a blog post or a new book. . . ?

@shapiro I am still getting my feet under me here, so I’m far from an expert, but many people seem to use the CW feature as a sort of post title or subject line. It’s partly out of courtesy to help people mentally filter what they want to see as they scroll. If they like the CW topic they can tap/click to view the post. For example, some people in my feed use the CW “sports,” which doesn’t trigger me but also doesn’t interest me, so I move on.

@pjmelton

Hmm. The “W” means “warning” - to be used on sensitive media. I suppose you could use it to hide a title, but It doesn’t seem to be used that way on what I’m seeing. Actually, I think what I’m talking about would be a “share” button.

@pjmelton

I know that “CW” stands for content warning which hides content until you click it. I used “mute” to silence the guys doing play-by-play of hockey games rather than CW (no offense, just not a fan). I’m hoping that Mastodon gets a large enough footprint so that share buttons start appearing in other social media - and in that case a title block is probably de rigeur. Does boosting create one?

@shapiro Above is how the content warning looks when I use it on a post. Boosting doesn’t create any kind of post title, just repeats the post. I am with you in the play by plays! Haha
