Watching the crazy right wing extremists trying to tell me that Mastodon has been built to “save the blue checkmarks from Elon’s Twitter so they can keep hating free speech in their own bubble” is hilarious.
@thelinuxEXP ...weren't (aren't?) their not-Twitter platforms based upon Mastodon?

@ChrisPirillo @thelinuxEXP

I think Parler is iirc...

@Sar @ChrisPirillo @thelinuxEXP Nah, Parler was its own thing.

Gab and Truth Social were Mastodon-based though

@ballisticfrogrevolt @ChrisPirillo @thelinuxEXP

Ahh it was Gab. Thankfully, I had completely forgotten about it 😂

@Sar @ChrisPirillo @thelinuxEXP

Ever hear the story on how the Mastodon community killed off Gab by defederating?

https://vid.puffyan.us/watch?v=yZoASOyfvGQ

@ballisticfrogrevolt @ChrisPirillo @thelinuxEXP

Ooh, I'll watch that tonight with some popcorn 😂😄

@ballisticfrogrevolt @Sar @ChrisPirillo @thelinuxEXP

That was a great video. Thanks for the link!

@ChrisPirillo @thelinuxEXP Truth Social is based on Mastodon. Of course, it doesn't comply with the open-source license.
@ChrisPirillo Yeah, AFAIK, Truth social and Gab are both based on Mastodon
@thelinuxEXP
yes and most of them are blocked because for some reason spam, hatespeech, blaming is coming surprisingly frequently from those instances, so many admins decide that their own instances shall not be used to spread such shit.
@ChrisPirillo
@zem @thelinuxEXP ...yeah, I have one standing follow request from what may be a blocked (de-federated?) instance. Since I don't know who it is (though I *am* familiar with the instance brand), I'm not going to risk it. Honestly, it's kinda interesting that they could even make the request and I could accept. Unsure what that'd do to the space-time continuum.
@ChrisPirillo Yeah, probably best not to! Also, can I just fanboy for one second and thank you for being there at the early days of YouTube? Lockergnome was probably the thing I ever watched on that site!
@thelinuxEXP ...oh, fantastic! Yeah that's a handle few remember, but playing with Mastodon makes me wonder if I should revive it as an instance with a helpful / how-to / tips / discovery / geeky / nerdy focus.
@ChrisPirillo I’d be here for it!
@thelinuxEXP ...gotta get a few questions answered first. Don't even know if I'd get enough direct financial support to pull it off, or people to help manage the server stuff. My bailiwick is community catalyzation, concepts (not operations).
@ChrisPirillo Oh yeah. The time and funds needed aren’t insubstantial!
@ChrisPirillo @thelinuxEXP I am seriously considering launching my own Mastodon server instance. To focus on 3d printing. First step accomplished. Got a cool domain for it. 3dp.social.
@BrianWeber @thelinuxEXP ...ah, yes! I know 3dp.chat exists, too. Room for more. Assuming rules will be different everywhere.
@thelinuxEXP @ChrisPirillo yeah. They are both forks of Mastodon. In fact, the Gab guy (whatever his name is) has talked about it openly.
@thelinuxEXP but... but... they use a fork of mastadon for themselves (multiple times)...
@thelinuxEXP Do people really think that??? If so that's hilarious
@thelinuxEXP
It is kind of a bubble.
But imho it is impossible to maintain a community without it become at least a little bit a bubble.
If you moderate it, you're going to exclude people since that is what moderation is. If you don't moderate it, the most verbally violent people will silence the rest.
There is no way to provide an absolute plurality.
On mastodon at least you can create a violent instance, it's just going to be disconnected from the rest of mastodon.
@xtrems876 yeah, absolutely: it can be used to crate any kind of environment you want
@thelinuxEXP Weird right-winger and their galaxy brain. You know what's weirder? In the fringe corner of FOSS world, there are right winger who think FOSS or Linux is somehow an effort to rebel against Soros-backed 5g Vaccine developer: Bill Gates, which somehow perceived as Left-wing cabal.
@thelinuxEXP in lighter news, your video inspired me to start using mastodon and spin up my own instance! I also made a pixelfed instance and peertube instance in case i ever wanna make content. Just out of curiosity, are you familiar with Matrix, and was there a reason it was left out of the upload?
@jame I have a matrix server for the channel, but I chose to talk about equivalents to the more “usual” social networks, there wasn’t enough time to mention everything :)
@thelinuxEXP @jame Is matrix also part of the fediverse ? If so i’m really impressed!
@NootNoot @thelinuxEXP It's my understanding that it *kind of* is. Matrix instances can talk to other Matrix instances, making it federated. However they can only communicate amongst themselves unless you set up some sort of puppeting bridge for other services
@jame @NootNoot @thelinuxEXP Matrix, while a federated service, is NOT part of the Fediverse because it cannot communicate on ActivityPub/Zot/OSatus/etc. It's still my go-to messenger, and popular among fedi users, but just because something is federated doesn't mean it's on the Fediverse.
@thatonecalculator @thelinuxEXP @jame @NootNoot "the fediverse" is a word that needs to die. it is an appropriation of the concept of federated systems to apply to just one federated system.
@[email protected] @thelinuxEXP @jame @NootNoot What "appropriation"? The creators of OStatus and ActivityPub endorse the use of the word Fediverse, and it's a lot more palatable than "Nodes interconnected by AcitityPub and supporting protocols"

@thatonecalculator @thelinuxEXP @lightning @NootNoot ive been on the platform for less than 24 hours and im already witnessing a flamewar.

internet gods why have you forsaken me

@jame @thelinuxEXP @[email protected] @NootNoot oooh boy.... one comment back and forth here is barely scraping the itty bitty top of the surface of what you'll find here
@thatonecalculator @thelinuxEXP @lightning @NootNoot maybe i was better off being a lurker,,, LOL
@jame jame my fellow compatriot, you don't even know the half of what could possibly go on the fediverse. have you ever heard of a "hellthread"?
@gamer i dont think i want to know gamer, im but a wee lad
@jame stay innocent young one. if you have the "mute thread" option on your instance, learn how to use it. i hope you never have to
@thatonecalculator @thelinuxEXP @jame @NootNoot the creators are also wrong (serious) - the unwieldy phrase is perhaps the only phrase that is good for this system.
@thelinuxEXP they already have Gab, which is basically a forked Mastodon instance after they were defederated!
@thelinuxEXP For people so fond of invoking "tradition," right-wing zealots are surprisingly ignorant of how villages, everywhere and in all climates and cultures, actually work.
@thelinuxEXP hahahah I don't even know where to start laughing at this statement. That is so wrong, on so many levels...
@thelinuxEXP
I'm honestly quite glad that something being "decentralized" doesn't mean Peter Theil has to be running the show 😅

@thelinuxEXP wow... I still remember when this started... also when Qwitter was created (that one that tried to copy twitter to the end).

People.....

@thelinuxEXP yea, that makes no sense. It's the exact opposite. 🤦
@thelinuxEXP
Free speech and open source is the way we must go if we want to avoid too much power in the hands of big companies.
Keep up the good work on YT and thx for relevant and good content.
@thelinuxEXP If Twitter ends up becoming the place where crazy right wing extremists yell at each other into the void, I will be okay with that.
