Reupping this for consideration, I think it's too late- even if there were some physiological differences it's become so political there's no hope of addressing it now. But it's worth knowing about if you have a hard time masking- try a bunch, try a PAPR, might change things.

Well shit. I was going back to First Principles on masks, and I think I may have fallen for “it works for me” engineer syndrome.

I continue to feel the "if you find masks uncomfortable you're a bad person and should feel bad" response directed at people who are ardently pro-mask and trying to find a solution to be extraordinarily unhelpful and counterproductive. There are options- and we need even more.

@SexyCyborg I agree wholeheartedly with this. We need to find solutions for everyone who wants to wear a mask.

I have zero time for people who are claiming masks are unsafe in general - especially since they wear masks when they are trying to overthrow a government - but as one of the only people still masking at my workplace, which contains 20K-60K people, I want to make sure everyone who wants to mask is able to do so. #COVID #masks

@SexyCyborg Agreed. We found way great masks for everyone in my family, but it took quite a bit of trial and error. It's unrealistic to expect most people to bother when public health leaders (at least in the US) are failing to communicate both the urgency of the problem and what can be done about it.
@SexyCyborg I suspect some of the negative sentiment around masks would go away if people had an easier time finding good ones that fit their faces well. Once you have a good one that fits well and breathes well, wearing it is not as big a deal.
@ianhenriksen @SexyCyborg Exactly. I have found ONE mask company with a design that fits my face comfortably and well and I have a certain amount of anxiety about having all my eggs in one basket.
@SexyCyborg you’re probably right, my only counterpoint is that i’m really mad about the sick kids
@SexyCyborg although i’m hopefully not directing any abuse at pro mask people

@SexyCyborg Anyone have any PAPR to recommend? Last time I looked I couldn't find anything that wasn't extremely expensive when compared to elastomerics. Like $1000+.

There are a few for $100-$200 on Amazon but they don't even claim any certification.
